What words can show that service jobs deserve as much respect as others?

Parenting Perspective

The foundation of a child’s perception of societal worth is heavily influenced by the language and tone used by their parents. When caregivers consistently speak of service-oriented roles—such as cleaners, hospitality staff, or transport operators—with genuine respect, children naturally internalise that dignity is inherent to honest effort, not dependent upon a job title or salary bracket. Every person who serves others in a lawful manner is inherently honoured in Allah Almighty’s estimation, and our outward behaviour must reflect this sacred truth.

Affirming Language in Daily Conversation

Parents must deliberately replace any potentially dismissive or unconsciously condescending phrases with affirming affirmations. The consistent use of positive framing is paramount in this educational process:Instead of vague acknowledgement, state clearly: ‘The individuals who maintain our shared spaces are performing valuable work that keeps our environment safe and healthy.’When observing patience in service: ‘They are serving people with great patience and composure; remember that Allah Almighty loves those who serve others with kindness.’

Leading by Visible Example

Teaching respect is most effective when it is demonstrated consistently through action. Encourage your child to participate in showing appreciation: make it a routine to genuinely thank restaurant servers, greet security personnel warmly, or offer a polite nod to bus conductors. These small, visible acts cement the lesson.

Furthermore, explicitly communicate to your child that every honest job sustains a family and contributes tangibly to the functionality of the entire community structure. Respect is not merely a superficial formality; it is a core behaviour that shapes a child’s worldview, dictating how they value both themselves and others. By honouring service roles publicly, children grow to be humble and grateful, rather than developing a sense of entitlement regarding who deserves their courtesy.

Spiritual Insight

In the Islamic ethical framework, arrogance and looking down upon others based on worldly status are explicitly condemned. This theological position provides a robust argument for affording equal respect to every individual engaged in lawful service, regardless of their occupation’s perceived standing.

The Quran instructs believers on the necessary deportment in social interactions, directly addressing the danger of pride, which is the root cause of disrespecting others’ occupations.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Luqman (31), Verses 18:

‘And do not turn your face away from people in arrogance, nor walk upon the earth proudly. Indeed, Allah does not like the arrogant and boastful…’

This divine command is a clear mandate for humility in every social exchange. It reminds parents and children alike that true worth in the sight of Allah Almighty is measured entirely by conduct, sincerity, and adherence to moral principles, not by social class or professional elevation. To turn one’s face away in haughtiness is to violate this core teaching.

The teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad  further contextualise this humility, connecting it directly to social justice and equality among people.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4179, that the holy Prophet Muhammad () said:

‘Allah has revealed to me that you should be humble so that no one oppresses another or boasts over another.’

Through understanding this Hadith, parents can powerfully connect the act of respecting all workers—from the highest official to the most humble service provider—as being an essential component of Islamic humility. Every person who serves others in a lawful manner is inherently honoured in Allah Almighty’s estimation, and our outward behaviour must reflect this sacred truth.
