What Words Can Gently Explain Why Parents Sometimes Miss Events for Work?

Parenting Perspective

When a parent has to forgo attending a significant event, such as a school play, sports match, or significant milestone, children often interpret this absence as a sign that they are unloved or unimportant. The primary objective in these moments is immediate and consistent reassurance, followed by a clear, loving explanation of the necessity of the work.

Reassurance and Reason

When delivering the explanation, it is vital to use a tone that is both calm and warm, conveying genuine regret for the absence alongside the fundamental reason for it. You might articulate it as follows: “My dearest, I truly wanted to be there to support you, but my work is necessary because it helps care for our whole family — it is what keeps our home safe and running smoothly for you.” This framing places the absence in the context of active provision and stewardship

Making Up for Missed Moments

To counteract the feeling of emotional loss, actively plan and execute small make-up moments that show dedicated, one-on-one attention. This might involve watching a recording of their performance together, engaging in a focused discussion about their artwork or achievement, or deliberately setting aside extra, uninterrupted time together shortly afterwards.

It is important to explain the concept that while physical presence is a form of love, so too is sacrificial provision. Over time, through consistent behaviour, children learn to internalise this truth: missing a single event does not equate to missing affection; rather, it reflects a parent’s profound care expressed through the fulfilment of responsibility. This perspective fosters maturity regarding the necessary demands of adult life.

Spiritual Insight

In the Islamic tradition, earning lawful provision—which sometimes necessitates personal sacrifice, such as missing social events—is highly valued. This effort is seen as fulfilling a Divine trust (Amanah) toward one’s dependants, and the sacrifice is never overlooked or unrewarded by the Almighty.

The Quran reassures the believer that any expenditure or sacrifice made for good—including the dedication of time toward lawful earning that benefits the family—is accounted for and blessed with divine return.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Saba (34), Verse 39:

‘And whatever you spend in good, He will replace it; and He is the best of providers…’

This powerful verse serves as a reminder that any time or effort parents dedicate to their rightful work of provision is not considered lost time. The sacrifice inherent in missing a child’s event for work is an expenditure in a good cause (securing the family’s welfare). Allah the Bestower of Sustenance replaces that sacrifice, often through Barakah (blessing) in the provision earned or through spiritual rewards in the Hereafter, thereby confirming that responsible commitment is never wasted.

The Hadith literature further sanctifies the income earned through honest labour by explicitly linking a parent’s earnings to the well-being and sustenance of their children.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2137, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

The best (most pure) food a man consumes is that which he has earned himself, and his child (and his child’s wealth) is part of his earnings.’

This profound statement offers parents the ultimate spiritual justification for their dedication. It clarifies that the efforts made in their professions are a direct investment in the love and care for their offspring. When parents share this teaching, they help children understand that the sacrifices made for work are intrinsically tied to the parent-child bond, serving as a concrete expression of care that ensures the child’s stability and well-being. This understanding transforms perceived absence into active, albeit distant, love
