What study skills will help my child beyond school?

Parenting Perspective

Foundational Skills: Time Management and Note-Taking

Many parents focus on study skills only in the context of passing exams, but the most valuable skills are those that will help your child succeed long after they leave the classroom. Begin by teaching time management, show your child how to break large tasks into smaller steps, plan and avoid leaving everything until the last minute. Encourage them to take clear notes in their own words, as note-taking builds real understanding, not just memorisation.

Asking Questions and Active Revision

Help them feel confident asking questions and seeking help when something is unclear, curiosity is a life skill that serves them well beyond school. Introduce simple revision techniques such as mind maps, flashcards or explaining a topic to someone else. These habits strengthen memory and make learning more active. Remind your child that mistakes and setbacks are not failures but opportunities to learn and grow. Praise effort and improvement rather than chasing perfection.

A Balanced and Reflective Approach

Support a balanced approach, breaks, fresh air, movement and sleep are not laziness but smart ways to study with a clear mind. Teach your child to reflect on what is working for them and adjust when needed. These habits nurture discipline, self-confidence and responsibility, qualities that will benefit them in college, work and daily life. Stay calm and encouraging, offering guidance without micromanaging. This helps your child learn to take charge of their studies and trust their own abilities.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches us that true knowledge should benefit us in both Dunya and Akhirah, and how we seek it matters as much as what we gain. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasised the value of seeking knowledge sincerely and with Ihsan (excellence).

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Mujadila (58), Verse 11:

Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. ‘

This Ayah reminds us that knowledge lifts our status when it is rooted in sincerity.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2646, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make the path to Paradise easy for him.

Teach your child that studying well is not only about tests but about fulfilling an Amanah. Make Dua together for beneficial knowledge: O Allah, grant my child understanding that brings them closer to You and benefits others. Encourage them to connect what they learn to their Islamic values, honesty in research, patience when things are hard, gratitude for every opportunity. Let them see that skills like planning, reflection, and asking questions mirror how our faith encourages thoughtful action. By grounding study skills in a bigger purpose, you help your child see learning not as a chore but to grow in character, serve the Ummah, and draw nearer to Allah Almighty’s mercy, InshaAllah
