By presenting honey not just as a sweet treat, but as a divine medicine and a miracle of nature, parents can connect an everyday blessing with a deeper spiritual truth. The story of the bee is a powerful lesson in obedience, purpose, and the perfection of Allah’s design. 

Weaving a Tale of Divine Instruction 

To capture your child’s imagination, you can frame the story of honey as a special mission given by Allah to the bees. The focus should be on the concepts of divine guidance, diligent work, and the beautiful result of perfect obedience. 

You could tell the story like this: ‘Allah Almighty, the Creator of everything, spoke to the tiny bees and gave them a very important job. He taught them exactly how to build their homes and inspired them to find the best nectar from all the different flowers. The bees listened very carefully. They fly out every single day, working together as a team, following the special map Allah placed in their hearts.  

Connecting Nature to the Creator 

The story’s impact can be reinforced during daily routines. Whenever honey is used in the home, a gentle reminder can strengthen this beautiful connection between nature and faith. Explain that honey is a gift wrapped in nature, a testament to Allah’s intricate and perfect plan. 

When you stir honey into warm milk for a sore throat or drizzle it over porridge, you can remind them: ‘Remember the story of the bees? This is the healing they made for us because they are so obedient to Allah. Every drop is a little bit of sweetness and goodness, a sign of Allah’s mercy’. Such moments are powerful tools. They awaken curiosity about the natural world and cultivate a deep sense of gratitude (Shukr) towards the Creator, connecting a child’s heart to the divine through the simplest of blessings. 

Spiritual Insight 

Honey holds a unique and honoured status in Islam. It is one of the few foods explicitly mentioned in the noble Quran as a substance containing healing for humanity. Its creation is presented not as a random act of nature, but as a profound sign (ayah) for those who reflect, demonstrating divine inspiration, organisation, and boundless benevolence. 

The Quran describes the process of honey production as a direct result of divine guidance given to the bee. This elevates the bee’s work from mere instinct to a divinely ordained mission, and its product from a simple food to a sacred medicine. 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Nahal (16), Verses 69: 

‘“Then eat from all types of fruits, and follow the designed pathways (of pollination) made smooth for you by your Sustainer.” There is then extracted from their bellies (of the bees), a liquid (honey) of varying colours, in which there is cure  for mankind; indeed, in this there are Signs (of the infinite truth) for those nations that wish to contemplate (on the inevitable truth).’ 

This verse is a marvel of spiritual and scientific wisdom. The instruction to ‘follow the ways of your Lord’ points to the divine inspiration (wahy) that guides the bee. The mention of honey’s ‘varying colors’ reflects the diverse botanical sources, a symbol of Allah’s vast and varied blessings. 

The teachings of the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ further solidify the status of honey, placing it at the forefront of natural medicine. His guidance transforms the consumption of honey from a dietary choice into a conscious act of following the Sunnah and seeking a divinely approved cure. 

It is recorded in Sahih Al Bukhari, 5680, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘Healing is in three things: A gulp of honey, cupping, and branding with fire (cauterizing).” But I forbid my followers to use (cauterization) branding with fire.’ 

This Hadith positions honey as a primary and legitimate source of healing. For a child, this understanding is profound. It teaches them that faith is not separate from their physical well-being. By taking honey for a cough, they are not only soothing their throat but are also participating in a prophetic tradition, expressing faith in Allah as Ash Shafi, The Healer. This transforms a simple spoonful of honey into an act of worship and trust. The lesson is that the bees, through their obedience, teach us the value of discipline.
