Parenting Perspective
Children learn best from stories that vividly show kindness through action. When they hear about the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ using his own strength to humbly help others, they begin to understand that true greatness lies in service, not in pride or status. Parents can use these stories to teach that helping with energy, time, and effort is a profound form of worship that earns Allah Almighty’s pleasure. The Prophet ﷺ never considered any act of service too small. He carried things, helped build, and supported others even when he was tired, showing that physical strength only becomes truly meaningful when it is used for good.
Helping with His Own Hands
The Prophet ﷺ set the ultimate example by never waiting for others to serve him. It is widely narrated that he used to mend his own clothes, milk his own goat, and actively assist his family with household chores. When companions asked why he did so, he explained that he loved helping and that humility strengthens the soul. Parents can explain, “The Prophet ﷺ helped at home with his hands even though he was the leader of the people. That shows how much Allah loves humility and kindness.”
Building with His Companions
During the difficult building of the first mosque in Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ did not merely supervise; he carried bricks and heavy stones alongside his companions. They saw him working joyfully, reciting Duas (supplications) as he lifted each piece. One companion tried to stop him out of respect, but the Prophet ﷺ insisted that every believer should share the effort. Tell your child, “He worked with everyone because he wanted to earn spiritual reward, not human honour or recognition.” This illustrates that no task is beneath anyone when done with the correct intention for Allah.
Standing Strong for Others
When the companions were digging the defensive trench (Khandaq) in preparation for battle, the Prophet ﷺ joined them physically, carrying soil on his back and encouraging them with supplications. Though he was often hungry and physically exhausted, he smiled and continued working. You can tell your child, “Even in extreme difficulty, the Prophet ﷺ helped because serving others gave him spiritual strength.” This teaches that physical effort expended in helping is not just work, it is a form of spiritual courage and resilience.
Caring for the Weak and the Needy
Whenever he saw someone struggling to carry something heavy, the Prophet ﷺ would often take the load upon himself to help. He never ignored the elderly or those in physical need. Children can be told, “Whenever the Prophet ﷺ saw someone tired or struggling, he helped them right away without asking. That is precisely how believers should use their strength to bring comfort, ease, and support.”
Spiritual Insight
Islam profoundly honours those who use their God-given abilities to support others. Service through physical action is among the most beloved deeds in the sight of Allah Almighty.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ma’idah (5), Verses 2:
‘And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty…’
This verse reminds believers to use their effort and energy to build goodness and community support together. Parents can explain, “When you help with your hands and heart, you are practising this powerful verse and obeying Allah’s command to cooperate in goodness.”
The spiritual value of strength is linked to service:
It is recorded in Mishkat Al Masabih, Hadith 3252, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The best of you are those who are best to their families, and I am the best among you to my family.’
This Hadith shows that true strength and spiritual excellence begin with humble service, especially towards one’s family and immediate community.
Together, the verse and Hadith demonstrate that the Prophet ﷺ used his strength not for display or personal comfort, but for selfless care. When parents tell these stories, they teach children that serving others makes them more like the Prophet ﷺ humble, strong, and beloved to Allah. Over time, they learn that real power is not in how much one can lift, but in how much good one can give and share.
