What stories of Allah’s mercy can help them see growth as a blessing?

Parenting Perspective

Children are naturally drawn to stories. Through storytelling, they absorb values, shape their imagination, and build connections between everyday life and deeper truths. When parents share stories of Allah’s mercy (often referred to as Rahmah), children begin to see their growth not as something random or earned solely by effort, but as a blessing from Allah Almighty. This helps anchor their milestones in gratitude rather than pride or comparison.

Using the Lives of the Prophets

The key is to choose stories that highlight how Allah cares for His creation at every stage. For young children, stories about the Prophets can be especially powerful because they show that even the greatest of Allah’s servants grew step by step, facing challenges and receiving mercy along the way. These narratives reassure children that growth is not about rushing but about trusting Allah’s plan and appreciating His guidance.

  • Prophet Musa (AS): You can share how Prophet Musa (AS) was once a baby, placed in a basket on the Nile. Allah protected him and nurtured him until he became a messenger. The story reminds children that Allah’s mercy guides us from our earliest days and that every stage of life is under His watchful care.
  • Prophet Yusuf (AS): Similarly, the story of Prophet Yusuf (AS), who grew from a young boy betrayed by his brothers into a man honoured in Egypt, teaches that growth comes with trials, but Allah’s mercy makes progress meaningful.

By telling such stories in simple, age-appropriate language, parents can help children feel that their own small steps like learning to walk, to speak, or to read are all part of Allah’s larger mercy. Each moment of progress becomes a reason to say Alhamdulillah rather than to compare with others.

Spiritual Insight

Islam offers countless examples of Allah’s mercy that can help children see growth as a blessing. The Quran often reminds us that every stage of development is a sign of His favour.

The Miracle of Creation

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Mu’minun (23), Verses 12–14:

‘And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay. Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging. Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made from the lump bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators…’

This verse can be shared with children as a gentle reminder that their very existence is a journey of mercy. Allah nurtured them from a tiny, unseen stage to the child they are today. By pausing after this verse and explaining, ‘Your growth is not random. Allah shaped you with love and care, step by step,’ parents help children see their development as sacred and purposeful.

Boundless Divine Love

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4297, that the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Allah is more merciful to His servants than a mother is to her child.’

This Hadith can be explained to children by reminding them of how much comfort and love they feel from their parents. If the love of a mother is already so powerful, then Allah’s mercy is even greater. Linking this to their growth helps children understand that every skill they learn and every step they take forward is wrapped in divine mercy.

By regularly sharing these stories and teachings, parents plant seeds of gratitude and humility in their children’s hearts. Growth is no longer just about achieving something new but about recognising the mercy of Allah in every stage. This mindset protects them from arrogance and comparison while filling their journey with gratitude.
