What stories can show that peace often hides in simplicity?

Parenting Perspective

Children often equate excitement and busyness with happiness because they view the world through the lens of constant stimulation: fast media and consumer culture teach them that more activity and possessions automatically bring joy. The emotional root of this perception is overstimulation. Children can overlook the subtle, quiet forms of contentment that arise from peace, calm, and balance. Parents can effectively counter this by sharing stories, both historical and personal, that highlight the value and strength of simplicity. Through narrative, children learn that peace often resides not in extravagance, but in moderation, gratitude, and mindful living

Stories of the Prophets

Stories of the Prophets provide powerful, foundational examples of peace found in simplicity. For instance, Prophet Muhammad  lived a humble life despite having opportunities for wealth and luxury. Share with children how the Prophet  slept on a simple mat and ate basic meals, yet he experienced deep satisfaction and joy because he valued spiritual richness, family connection, and community service over material possessions. This account shows that dignity and peace do not depend on accumulation or display. Similarly, Prophet Yusuf (peace be upon him), while imprisoned, maintained serenity and trust in Allah Almighty. Despite harsh circumstances, he found peace through faith, patience, and reflection. These examples illustrate that simplicity, coupled with reliance on Allah Almighty, nurtures an inner calm that possessions alone cannot provide.

Using Family Stories

Stories do not have to be historical alone; personal and family narratives are equally impactful. Share tales of grandparents or other relatives who lived modestly yet were content, resilient, and grateful. For example, a grandparent who managed a simple household but prioritised love, prayer, and service can become a tangible role model for children. Such stories make the concept of simplicity concrete, helping children recognise that peace often comes from everyday choices and values rather than from acquiring more. Reflecting on these stories fosters a mindset where children associate calm and joy with intentional living rather than with indulgence.

Micro-Action: Reflection and Connection

After telling a story, guide children to reflect on its meaning. Ask questions such as: “What brought them peace , the things they had or their values and faith?” Encourage them to describe what in the story felt calming or satisfying. This reflective practice trains children to connect peace with purpose and simplicity, rather than with noise, excess, or material accumulation.

Spiritual Insight

The noble Quran repeatedly teaches that true peace lies in remembrance of Allah Almighty and simplicity of heart, not in material wealth or complexity.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ar Ra’d (13), Verse 28:

‘Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured…’

This ayah highlights that serenity is rooted in faith and mindful awareness, not in external abundance. Children learn that while worldly possessions can be enjoyable, lasting peace is found in gratitude, trust, and spiritual reflection.

The Holy Prophet Muhammad  reinforced this understanding through guidance and example, connecting wealth to the internal state of contentment:

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4137, that the Holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Riches are not from an abundance of worldly goods but from a contented mind.’

This teaching clarifies that true wealth is measured by mental and spiritual satisfaction, not by material accumulation. When parents connect stories of the prophets, ancestors, and everyday life with these teachings, children gradually internalise that peace is often hidden in less rather than more. By consistently modelling and discussing simplicity, parents help children see that calm, dignity, and contentment can coexist with modesty.
