What stories can inspire children to keep their hair and body clean as the Prophet ﷺ encouraged?

Parenting Perspective

Stories shape a child’s moral imagination more deeply than direct instructions can. When teaching about cleanliness, it helps to share gentle, uplifting narratives that show how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ cared for his own hair and body. Through these stories, a child learns that personal cleanliness is not only a habit of hygiene but also an act of self-respect and gratitude to Allah Almighty.

Connect Emotionally Through Storytelling

Begin by introducing the idea that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was always neat and well-groomed. You might say, ‘The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ loved to be clean and tidy. He would comb his hair, apply oil to it, and keep his clothes fresh’. This helps a child see that caring for their body is not about vanity, but about following a noble example.

You can share short, vivid stories to illustrate this. For instance: ‘Once, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ saw a man with messy hair and gently said that it would be better if he combed it. He reminded people that looking clean pleases Allah Almighty because it shows respect for the body He has given us’. By hearing these stories, children realise that grooming and bathing are acts of dignity, not burdens.

Turn Cleanliness into an Enjoyable Routine

To make cleanliness an enjoyable part of the day, give each routine a positive name. For example, you could call bath time ‘fresh start time’ and combing hair ‘Sunnah shine time’. You can tell your child stories during these moments, such as, ‘The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also loved to be clean before his prayers’. When your child shows care for their appearance, affirm their effort with simple appreciation like, ‘You brushed your hair just as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ liked. That makes Allah Almighty happy too’. These affirmations help your child feel that cleanliness is both beautiful and rewarding.

Parents can also guide children to see that outward cleanliness mirrors the purity of the heart. You might say, ‘When we clean our body, we also help to clean our mind from anger and our heart from sadness’. This simple reflection connects the physical with the emotional, helping the child understand that a pure body supports a peaceful and pure heart.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, cleanliness (taharah) is not a mere physical state; it is a reflection of faith and spiritual discipline. Caring for one’s hair and body is part of honouring the human form that Allah Almighty has created. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that neatness brings dignity to believers and that these small acts are beloved to Allah Almighty.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Araf (7), Verses 31:

‘O children of Adam! Take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but do not be excessive. Indeed, He does not like those who commit excess…’

This verse reminds us that cleanliness and modest adornment are part of showing respect when standing before Allah Almighty. It encourages believers to maintain beauty in moderation. You can tell your child, ‘When we comb our hair and keep our body clean, we are preparing ourselves to be near Allah in the best way’.

It is recorded in Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 4163, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Whoever has hair, let him honour it.’

This hadith shows that caring for one’s hair is not about appearance alone, but about respect for the creation of Allah Almighty. You might explain, ‘The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said to honour your hair that means washing it, combing it, and keeping it neat’. By repeating this teaching gently, children internalise that looking after themselves is an act of worship.

Through these stories and reminders, children learn that grooming and cleanliness are not chores but blessings. They begin to associate purity with peace, cleanliness with confidence, and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with love.
