Heroes of Faith: The Prophets 

Stories shape children’s values more deeply than lectures, and when their role models are primarily defined by wealth or status, they may mistakenly believe that riches equal greatness. Parents can redirect this aspiration by sharing timeless stories of the Prophets, who embody the pinnacle of character. Begin by telling the story of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who stood firm in his faith and submission to Allah Almighty even when cast into the fire. This exemplifies courage and conviction above all else. Similarly, speak of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who lived with profound simplicity yet was honoured by all, even his enemies, with the title “Al-Amin” (the trustworthy). These narratives clearly demonstrate that lasting respect and honour come from character, truthfulness, and faith, not from worldly wealth or possessions. 

The Companions and Family Legacy 

Share powerful stories of the Prophet’s companions, whose generosity defined their greatness. Tell the story of Abu Bakr’s deep-seated generosity in spending his entire wealth for the sake of Allah Almighty, showing that true richness is in giving, not possessing. Contrast this with the story of Umar ibn Al-Khattab’s relentless pursuit of justice and profound humility despite his vast power as a ruler. Include relevant family stories too; perhaps tales of grandparents or elders who lived modestly but earned immense honour and respect from their community through their honesty, service, and resilience. After sharing, always ask your child, “What made people remember them, their clothes or expensive house, or their goodness and kindness?” This reflection helps children recognise what truly earns lasting respect. 

As a micro-action, encourage your child to retell these stories in their own words. Ask them to highlight the specific moral qualities that made each hero admired, such as courage, patience, sincerity, or justice. Storytelling in their own voice deepens their personal understanding and builds an emotional connection to these virtuous values. 

Spiritual Insight on True Greatness 

The noble Quran presents the prophets and righteous people as essential, timeless examples for all believers to follow. Allah Almighty states in Surah Al Mumtahanah (60), Verse 4: 

‘There has been for you an excellent pattern in Ibrahim and those with him…’ 

This ayah reminds us that these stories of faith and steadfastness are meant to serve as direct guidance for our lives, not mere entertainment. Furthermore, the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ clearly linked faith to behaviour. It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1162, that the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘The most perfect believer in faith is the one whose character is best.’ 

This teaching is a constant reminder that character is the ultimate measure of piety. When parents consistently tell stories that highlight character over wealth, children begin to redefine what it means to be a hero. They learn that greatness is measured by integrity, compassion, and faith, not by riches or possessions, shaping lifelong values rooted in humility.
