What steps make shoe shopping feel fair with different foot needs?

Parenting Perspective

Shoe shopping can often become a point of contention in a family, especially when siblings have different foot needs or sizes. It is important to approach this task with a sense of fairness and transparency, ensuring that all your children feel valued and supported, regardless of the differences in what they require. By setting clear expectations and focusing on the overall fairness of the experience, you can create a positive and enjoyable shopping trip for everyone.

Discuss Their Different Foot Needs Openly

You can start by acknowledging the different foot needs and sizes of your children. ‘I understand that your foot sizes are different, and that means some of you may need new shoes more frequently or may require different styles. Let us look at the best options for each of you based on what is necessary.’ This sets a tone of fairness and ensures that all your children’s needs are acknowledged without creating any sense of competition.

Set a Reasonable and Flexible Budget

Establish a budget for shoes that can account for your children’s different needs. ‘We will have a budget for shoes, and we will make sure that everyone gets what they need. Some of you may need more durable shoes, and others may need shoes for a different purpose, but we will stick to our budget to make sure everyone is looked after.’ This helps a child to understand that while their needs may differ, the ultimate goal is to provide for everyone fairly within the family’s financial means.

Consider the Long-Term Use and Quality of the Shoes

When shopping for shoes, it is wise to focus on their quality and long-term use, particularly for children who are growing quickly. You can say, ‘Let us try to choose shoes that will last a long time and that will fit you well, so that you will not need new ones again too soon.’ This helps a child to appreciate the value of durable, long-lasting shoes and can avoid the temptation to focus only on passing trends.

Involve Your Children in the Process

Encourage your children to be involved in the selection process, helping them to understand the reasoning behind your choices. ‘Let us find some shoes that fit well, are comfortable, and are within our budget. I know you each have different needs, but let us make sure we choose wisely together.’ This ensures that your children feel involved in the thoughtful decision-making and reinforces the overall fairness of the process.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, fairness, responsibility, and gratitude are core principles. When shopping for items like shoes, it is important to ensure that each child’s needs are met while also considering the family’s financial situation. By handling this task with fairness and wisdom, you are instilling the Islamic values of justice and gratitude.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 282:

‘O you who have believed, when you contract a debt for a specified term, write it down. And let a scribe write [it] between you in justice…’

This verse reminds us of the great importance of fairness and justice in all our transactions, even in everyday activities like shopping. By ensuring that each child receives what they need in a fair and just manner, you are aligning with the Islamic principles of equity and responsibility.

It is recorded in Mishkat Al Masabih, Hadith 3675, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Give every person their due right…’

This hadith encourages us to give what is due to each person, ensuring fairness and justice. In the context of shopping for shoes for your children, this teaches us to meet each child’s individual needs fairly, providing them with what they require without causing comparison or resentment.
