Parenting Perspective
When your child sees classmates showing off new gadgets, expensive clothing, or lifestyle habits that conflict with your family’s principles or finances, it can create tension and comparison. Your child may feel embarrassed for having less, and you may feel torn between protecting your values and preventing their disappointment. The goal is not to reject everything modern, but to help your child think critically: does this align with who we are and what Allah Almighty loves?
Begin with Conversation, Not Criticism
Start by asking, ‘What do you like about this trend?’ Often, it is not the object itself that attracts them, but the feeling of belonging, beauty, or status associated with it. Validate these emotions, as they are a natural part of being human, and then guide them toward reflection: ‘Does this trend fit with our way of living? Would it still feel right if we could not show it to others?’ This shifts the focus from seeking peer validation to developing personal conviction.
Build a Family Compass
Write down your family’s guiding values, such as gratitude, simplicity, modesty, and honesty. When a new trend appears, measure it against this compass. Ask these questions together:
- Is it Halal and respectful?
- Does it reflect gratitude or pride?
- Is it within our financial means?
- Will it distract us from our purpose?
This process turns every choice into an opportunity for moral training rather than an exercise of parental control.
Equip Them with Calm, Confident Replies
Rehearse short, steady responses for social situations so that your child feels prepared. For example:
- ‘That is not really my thing.’
- ‘We spend our money differently in my family.’
- ‘It looks nice, but I am happy with what I have.’
- ‘We are trying to save for what matters most to us.’
These phrases sound confident without being judgemental. Practise them in both tone and timing so they are delivered in a firm, polite, and assured manner. Confidence is not loud; it is consistent.
Shift Focus from Possession to Purpose
Celebrate creativity, skill, and kindness instead of appearance or material possessions. Encourage hobbies, charity work, and personal goals that bring fulfilment from within. Children who learn to see value in what they do rather than what they own develop strong resilience against social pressure.
Show Balance, Not Rigidity
If a trend is harmless and affordable, remain open-minded. Sometimes, adopting selective and positive trends demonstrates that Islam allows for enjoyment within Halal and moderate limits. This balance teaches flexibility without compromising core principles.
Spiritual Insight
Islam guides believers toward moderation, encouraging a path of neither deprivation nor extravagance. When trends threaten our faith or financial peace, choosing restraint becomes an act of worship. Living by our values instead of seeking social validation gives a family a sense of peace that no possession can provide.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqaan (25), Verse 67:
‘And it is those people that do not spend extravagantly, nor miserly; and (act in such a way) that is a balanced format between these two (extreme characteristics).’
This verse beautifully defines balance. Teach your child that wise spending is not determined by how much you have, but by how consciously you use it. Each act of moderation preserves barakah, the quiet blessing that makes a little feel like enough.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3605, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Eat, give charity, and wear clothes, but do not be extravagant or arrogant.’
This Hadith teaches that enjoying the blessings of Allah Almighty is permissible, but pride and excess destroy gratitude. When your child learns to appreciate what they have, they begin to measure life by contentment, not comparison. By modelling simplicity, fairness, and gratitude, you show that values are not rules designed to restrict life but are pathways to protect peace. In a world chasing novelty, your child’s calm moderation becomes an act of faith that Allah Almighty blesses with sufficiency, dignity, and ease.
