Parenting Perspective
In the contemporary world, children are inevitably facing situations where phones are suddenly produced; classmates record ‘funny’ moments, playground challenges, or even minor accidents. Your child may feel unsure exactly how to react when they notice filming, whether they are the immediate target, an innocent bystander, or reluctantly part of the group. The core goal is to help them remain calm, successfully protect their personal dignity, and respond safely without resorting to panic or unnecessary confrontation.
Beginning with Awareness, Not Alarm
You must explain clearly that mobile phones appear virtually everywhere, and being highly aware of their presence is an integral part of modern social manners. Say, ‘When people have their phones out and are filming, remember this: you do not have to join in, and you always have the option to calmly step back.’ Awareness is always their most effective first defence. Help your child fully understand that not every single video is harmless. Sometimes, what innocently begins as a joke can tragically evolve into public embarrassment or online harassment. Encourage them to trust their inner discomfort: ‘If it instinctively feels wrong, it usually is not right.’
Teaching Calm, Safe Actions
If they notice unconsented filming in a setting like school or a public park, guide them to follow these quiet, practical steps:
- Step Away Discreetly: Teach them to simply walk out of the camera’s view without drawing any excessive attention to themselves. Calm, immediate withdrawal protects their dignity far better than loudly shouting or attempting to snatch phones.
- Say Something Short and Steady: If verbal words are necessary, practice short, clear lines such as:
- ‘Please do not film me.’
- ‘Can you stop recording that now?’
- ‘I am not okay with being in that video.’
Use a calm, even tone; it must be firm, never fearful.
- Seek an Adult’s Help: If the filming persistently continues or makes them feel unsafe, strongly encourage your child to tell a trusted teacher, coach, or parent immediately. Explain clearly, ‘Reporting a safety concern is not simply tattling; it is responsibly protecting privacy and safety.’
- Do Not Retaliate Online: They must never post angry responses or defensive comments on social media. Silence, coupled with formal reporting, is always much stronger than engaging in digital arguments.
You must rehearse these specific steps together through role play so your child feels genuinely ready rather than feeling helpless when the situation arises.
Teaching Empathy When Others Are Filmed
Sometimes your child will be a mere bystander to unconsented filming. Teach them the immediate importance of avoiding sharing, laughing at, or forwarding videos that mock or deliberately humiliate someone else. Explain plainly, ‘If you would not want that content shared about you, then you must not share it about anyone else.’ They can quietly say to the group, ‘Let us not record people without permission,’ or gently change the subject entirely to successfully defuse the situation without creating immediate drama. Even simple silence in that exact moment is a powerful act of protection.
Building Privacy Habits Early
Encourage your child to be carefully considerate with their own filming habits too. Set clear family rules: absolutely no recording others without their explicit permission, no posting classmates online, and always consciously asking for consent before sharing any images. You must consistently model this respect at home by always seeking their consent when you wish to take photos or videos of them. When privacy is consciously mutual, it becomes truly meaningful. Remind them that their immense personal worth transcends the screen. Reassure them, ‘If someone records you unfairly, it does not in any way define who you are. What matters most is your inner calm and your truth.’ This truth helps them stay anchored when things feel entirely out of their control.
Spiritual Insight
Islam places immense, non negotiable value on privacy, personal modesty, and actively protecting others from harm; these are crucial values that powerfully apply to the digital age. The noble Quran and the Sunnah teach us that honouring another person’s dignity is a fundamental part of true faith, whether that is in speech, action, or digital recording.
Respecting Privacy as a Trust
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nur (24), Verse 27:
‘O you who believe! Do not enter houses other than your own until you seek permission and greet their inhabitants. That is better for you, that you may be mindful…‘
This verse, although literally about entering physical homes, perfectly establishes a profound principle: we must respect boundaries and consciously seek consent. Filming someone without their clear permission is the modern, digital equivalent of entering their private space entirely uninvited. You can sincerely tell your child, ‘When you calmly step away from filming or firmly refuse to share a video, you are honouring the deep privacy that Allah Almighty explicitly commands us to protect.’
The Prophet ﷺ‘s Guidance on Protecting Others
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 225, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Whoever relieves a believer’s distress in this world, Allah will relieve his distress on the Day of Resurrection.‘
This significant Hadith reminds children that actively protecting someone from humiliation, whether it is online or public embarrassment, is a powerful act of mercy that earns genuine divine reward. When they firmly refuse to film or share harmful videos, they are actively relieving another person’s distress; this act is consequently counted as worship. Explain, ‘When you consciously choose kindness instead of mere curiosity, you bring tangible mercy into the world.’
Teaching your child how to wisely respond when phones are filming is about much more than just safety; it is fundamentally about building strong character. They learn that personal dignity is absolutely not negotiable, that inner calmness is a true source of power, and that consistent kindness always far outweighs fleeting popularity. Spiritually, they come to understand that Allah Almighty sees their quiet, respectful choices; the moments they consciously look away, walk away, or speak up politely. These are the unseen acts of quiet courage that diligently build their faith and honour. With this vital guidance, your child grows up knowing that in a world that seems to record everything instantly, the single most valuable thing they can protect is not their public image, but their profound inner integrity.
