What should I say when they ask why Allah gave us so much variety?

When a child thoughtfully asks why Allah Almighty created such immense variety in the world of food, their question reaches far deeper than mere curiosity about biology; they are fundamentally asking about the meaning and purpose of creation. This is a powerful opportunity to connect aesthetics with theology. 

Variety as an Expression of Divine Mercy 

Explain to them that this diversity—in every taste, colour, aroma, and texture—is a direct and beautiful expression of Allah’s boundless mercy (Rahmah) and generosity. Say, ‘Allah Almighty possesses the power to have given us just one simple, functional kind of food to sustain us, yet He chose to bestow upon us this immense diversity for the sake of beauty, pleasure, full nourishment, and joy.’ Frame this variety as a lesson in divine artistry: ‘Allah made such extraordinary variety so that we may see and appreciate His magnificent artistry and wisdom, not merely satisfy our basic human appetite.’ 

Cultivating Gratitude Over Greed 

The sheer scale of variety must be used to encourage genuine gratitude over the temptation of greed or wastefulness. Engage your children in a joint exploration of this blessing. Spend time intentionally observing and appreciating different types of fruits, grains, spices, or vegetables. For each new discovery, encourage them to express ‘SubhanAllah’ (Glory be to Allah). 

It is essential to teach that this extensive variety serves a crucial purpose: it is intended to teach us appreciation and wonder, not to fuel careless indulgence or waste. When children are guided to see and understand every distinct flavour and unique colour as a deliberate gift, they naturally begin to perceive and taste life through the lens of wonder and gratitude, rather than one of demanding entitlement or ungrateful complaint. This transforms the kitchen into a place of active theological study. 

Spiritual Insight 

Within Islam, the rich tapestry of diversity found in the natural world, particularly in food, is understood as a fundamental catalyst for reflection (tadhakkur) and remembrance of the Creator. This vast array of forms is a sign (ayah) leading the thoughtful mind back to the source of all power and wisdom. 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Nahl (16), Verse 13: 

‘And He has subjected to you whatever He multiplied for you on the earth of varying colours. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who remember…’ 

This potent ayah reveals the profound spiritual purpose behind the variety of creation. It establishes that diversity in every aspect of creation—from the varying colours of fruits to the multitude of human languages—is a clear, open invitation to reflection (tadhakkur), not a license for indulgence (israf). By teaching this verse, children learn to see that every subtle shade, every distinct flavour, and every unique texture is a direct, beautiful reminder of divine creativity and the unlimited scope of Allah’s knowledge and power. The provision becomes proof of the Provider. 

It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 611, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:  

‘Indeed, Allah is beautiful and loves beauty.’ 

This noble hadith provides the perfect theological framework for appreciating variety: the existence of such immense diversity is a direct reflection of Allah’s own perfect beauty (Jamal). It teaches children that the appreciation of differences—not just in the food they eat, but also in nature, cultures, and people—is itself a commendable act of faith, as it constitutes the active recognition and acknowledgement of Allah’s infinite splendour. By valuing this diversity, they align their hearts and minds with the divine preference for beauty and perfection, transforming their acceptance of variety into an act of true spiritual insight.
