What should I say if my child asks why wrongdoers succeed?
Parenting Perspective
Redefine ‘Success’
If your child asks why wrongdoers seem to succeed, it is important to address the question thoughtfully and to explain that worldly success does not always reflect true success in the eyes of Allah. You can start by acknowledging your child’s concern and helping them to understand that appearances can be deceiving. You might say, ‘Sometimes, people who do wrong seem to succeed, but true success is not just about wealth, power, or fame. Success in this life and the next is about doing what is right and pleasing Allah.’
Explain that Success Can Be a Test
Explain to your child that Allah may allow certain individuals to experience success, even if they are not following His guidance, as a test for them. You can say, ‘Allah may give success to wrongdoers as a test, but true success lies in doing good and staying on the right path. We should focus on following the values of honesty, kindness, and justice, regardless of what others do.’
Use Stories to Illustrate
Use examples from Islamic history or stories from the Quran and Hadith to illustrate how worldly success can be temporary and misleading. For example, you can explain that the Pharaoh, despite his immense wealth and power, was ultimately punished for his arrogance and wrongdoing, while the Prophet Musa (AS), despite facing great challenges, was rewarded for his faith and perseverance. This teaches your child that worldly success is not the ultimate measure of a person’s worth. Encourage your child to focus on their own actions, making choices that align with Islamic principles.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, it is emphasised that worldly success is not the ultimate measure of a person’s worth, and that Allah’s judgement is what truly matters. Allah Almighty reminds us in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:
‘Allah (Almighty) does not place any burden on any human being except that which is within his capacity….’
This verse teaches us that life’s tests and challenges, including the apparent success of wrongdoers, are part of Allah’s divine plan and wisdom, and that we should remain focused on doing good and staying true to our faith.
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also emphasised that true success lies in righteousness, not in worldly achievements. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6594, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:
‘Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise.’
This Hadith teaches us that success is rooted in doing what is right, regardless of the temporary success that wrongdoers may experience. By helping your child to understand that true success lies in following the right path, you are guiding them to focus on their faith and to trust in Allah’s plan.
