What Should I Do When Elders Expect Perfection From Them In Cooking?

Parenting Perspective

When elders expect perfection from a child who is merely learning to cook, their well-intentioned encouragement can sometimes be misinterpreted by the child as harsh criticism. As a conscientious parent, your role is to strategically balance respect for the elders with essential protection of your child’s emotional space. Begin by deeply understanding both perspectives. Elders often view cooking as a serious expression of discipline, devotion, and family pride, whereas children today may perceive it as purely creative or entirely optional. The true key is to help both generations meet gracefully halfway

Framing Feedback as Care

Start by purposefully preparing your child for the interaction beforehand: ‘Grandma may point out small details because she genuinely wants to pass on her invaluable knowledge, not because she thinks you are performing it incorrectly.’ This simple framing reframes the feedback as an act of affectionate care rather than a harsh judgement. Afterwards, ensure you praise your child enthusiastically in front of the elders—for example, ‘She is learning this process so beautifully and quickly, just exactly as you first taught me.’ This public appreciation helps both parties feel deeply valued. In private, gently remind the elders that ultimate perfection is not the objective; rather, building confidence and nurturing connection are the primary goals.

Cultivating Joy Over Pressure

If the underlying tension noticeably continues, consciously create shared cooking sessions focused on lighter recipes where small mistakes are functionally harmless. Actively encourage laughter and shared stories, not serious lectures. Allow the child to clearly see that cultural participation can be sincerely enjoyed without pressure, and let the elders feel that their profound wisdom is still actively sought and greatly valued. True, lasting learning happens most effectively when love and patience consciously coexist—never when the pursuit of perfection unintentionally overshadows the true, communal purpose.

Spiritual Insight

The Quran calls for balance in worldly pursuits, emphasising that striving for good should be done with kindness. Effort, when consistently done with genuine sincerity (ikhlas), carries far more spiritual weight than elusive worldly perfection itself.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Qasas (28), Verse 77:

‘And seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; but do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you…’

This profound verse beautifully teaches essential balance (wasatiyyah)—to diligently strive for excellence in all your dealings, yet always remain inherently kind and spiritually grounded. Remind the elders that “doing good” includes meticulously guiding others, especially the young, with sincere gentleness. The child, too, learns a spiritual lesson: that simply trying their very best is a powerful and accepted form of gratitude to Allah Almighty

The Prophet’s ﷺ guidance establishes gentleness as the most rewarded of all teaching and corrective methods.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3688, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Verily, Allah is Gentle and loves gentleness. He gives for gentleness what He does not give for harshness.’

This critically important Hadith stands as a timeless reminder for all families. When the elders choose to teach the young with consistent softness, and the children respond with sincere respect, barakah immediately enters both their hearts. The family kitchen then becomes not just a physical place for transmitting recipes, but a foundational space for the essential refinement of character. Through gentle guidance and conscious, patient learning, your home begins to beautifully reflect prophetic manners—where deliberate kindness becomes the secret, most essential ingredient that makes every cultural meal complete and spiritually nourishing.
