Parenting Perspective
When a child asserts that a task is exclusively “for girls” or “for boys,” it is essential to address the comment with balanced understanding and calmness. Children frequently acquire these rigid notions from peers, various media influences, or even from ingrained cultural norms that may unintentionally perpetuate gender stereotypes. This moment offers a critical teaching opportunity where you can help your child cultivate a more balanced, inclusive, and equitable view of roles and gender. Your thoughtful response has the power to shape their lasting perspective on equality, mutual respect, and the fundamental value of every individual, irrespective of their gender identity.
Start with a Gentle Question to Encourage Reflection
Instead of immediately rushing to correct the statement, you can start by asking your child a gentle, open ended question to stimulate critical reflection on their underlying assumption. For example, you should calmly ask:
‘Why do you think that specific task is just for girls or exclusively for boys?’
This question successfully encourages your child to think critically about the reasoning that informs their statement and gently invites them to challenge the stereotype on their own terms. It also clearly communicates that you respect their initial thoughts while you simultaneously guide them towards a more inclusive and mature pattern of thinking.
Introduce the Concept of Shared Responsibilities
Once the child has had a moment to reflect, you can carefully guide them towards understanding that tasks and defined roles should never be limited by gender. You can clearly explain this principle by stating:
‘Actually, essential chores and important responsibilities are meant for everyone, regardless of whether you are a girl or a boy. We all share in the important work required to maintain a house that is clean, tidy, and safe. Everyone can contribute to different things based on their particular skills and individual interests.’
This establishes the core idea that the allocation of tasks is fundamentally about cooperation and partnership, not about conforming to a restrictive, gender specific role. It also reinforces the crucial belief that every person’s unique contribution is valuable and necessary.
Use Practical Examples from Daily Life
Utilise clear, real life examples to concretely show your child that both boys and girls are capable of doing virtually anything. For instance, you could offer a relatable scenario:
‘Do you remember how your brother competently helps with sorting and folding the laundry? And how your sister genuinely enjoys assisting in the kitchen with the cooking? Both boys and girls are capable of doing all kinds of beneficial things!’
By providing examples drawn directly from your own family or from others they know, you powerfully demonstrate that tasks are not restricted by gender; they are primarily determined by interest, innate ability, or personal preference. This consistent modelling encourages children to feel confident in stepping outside of traditionally defined roles.
Focus on Skills and Interests, Not Gender
It is highly effective to deliberately shift the focus of the discussion entirely away from gender and towards the development of specific skills and personal interests. You can communicate this core message by stating:
‘This is not really about the difference between being a boy or being a girl; it is purely about whether you enjoy learning new things. Anyone can become proficient at different tasks if they practice diligently and possess a genuine willingness to help out.’
This perspective fosters a growth mindset in the child and helps them fully realise that their abilities are never defined by their gender but are shaped entirely by their effort and their proactive willingness to learn.
Spiritual Insight
Within the framework of Islam, the principle of equality stands as a fundamental pillar. Allah Almighty created men and women with unique and complementary strengths, but both genders are valued equally and profoundly in His sight. The noble Quran and the authentic teachings of the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ consistently highlight the paramount importance of treating every individual with fairness, justice, and unwavering respect, entirely without prejudice to gender.
The Equality of Men and Women in the Sight of Allah Almighty
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujurat (49), Verse 13:
‘O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most honourable of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you…’
This central Ayat teaches an eternal truth: that honour and nobility in the sight of Allah Almighty are never based on superficial factors like gender, race, or social status, but are exclusively determined by the level of a person’s righteousness and good character (taqwa). By continuously reinforcing this Divine message with your children, you help them internalise the understanding that everyone, regardless of their gender, holds equal value in the eyes of their Creator. Consequently, tasks and shared responsibilities should not be arbitrarily divided by gender, but rather by demonstrated capability, spiritual kindness, and a sincere willingness to contribute.
The Prophet ﷺ’s Example of Equality in Roles
It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 278, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The best of you are those who are the best to their women.’
This Hadith powerfully underscores the vital importance of equality and mutual respect within the family unit. The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ treated his revered wives and beloved daughters with the highest level of respect and actively engaged in sharing numerous household responsibilities. His exemplary behaviour shows us definitively that no specific task is reserved exclusively for one gender; rather, both men and women are equally capable of fulfilling their respective duties and responsibilities both within the home and in the wider community.
By thoughtfully and carefully responding when your child attempts to assign tasks based on gender, you effectively teach them to actively value equality, cooperation, and competence over restrictive stereotypes. Both sons and daughters are equally capable of fulfilling any role or responsibility required within the home, and this progressive approach not only offers immense practical benefits to the family but also positively shapes their broader, more inclusive view of the world. Through this deliberate guidance, you help them mature into respectful, capable individuals who truly understand that their genuine value is derived from their character and their consistent effort, and never from their gender.
