What Routines Can Connect School Effort to the Idea of Work and Earnings? 

Parenting Perspective 

To successfully bridge the conceptual gap between a child’s academic life and the adult world of work and earning, you must intentionally begin by showing how school effort mirrors real-life professional work. This involves setting up small, clear systems where your child can actively “earn” privileges or small rewards through the consistent and responsible application of effort—for example, earning extra story time or a small treat only after they have successfully completed their weekly academic goals. 

Modelling Professional Attributes Early On 

It is crucial to discuss how adults function in the workplace, drawing parallels to the classroom. Talk about how teachers, much like future employers, value characteristics such as effort, reliability, and meeting deadlines. Help your child explicitly see that showing up for school each day, persisting when a task is difficult, and diligently completing homework assignments are simply their early, foundational forms of responsibility. 

Language 

Use language that connects their current effort to future impact: “Right now, your primary responsibility your job is your studies, and the act of learning diligently is precisely how you are preparing yourself to serve the community and earn lawfully later in life.” When effort and application are praised consistently and more highly than the final grades alone, children internalise the profound lesson that genuine, sustainable success grows directly from steady, devoted work, not from luck or chance. This builds intrinsic motivation. 

Spiritual Insight 

Islam views all lawful effort, including the dedicated pursuit of knowledge, as an intrinsic part of worship, provided the intention is sound. By connecting a child’s studies to the concept of future service and lawful earning, we root their education within a divine framework of accountability and purpose. 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Inshiqaq (84), Verse 6: 

‘O mankind, indeed you are labouring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet Him…’ 

This solemn ayah serves as a powerful reminder that exertion and diligent labour are not incidental to life but are woven into the very rhythm of our existence as human beings. Every stage of striving, whether it is physical, intellectual, or spiritual, becomes an act of worship when undertaken with sincere intention and directed towards pleasing the Lord. Schoolwork, therefore, is reframed as a sincere exertion towards meeting Allah Almighty with the best possible state. 

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged the development of strength in all aspects of a believer’s life, linking this strength directly to a higher standing in the sight of Allah. 

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 79, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:  

‘The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both. Strive for that which benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not be helpless.’ 

This beautiful maxim teaches children that the strength in their studies, which includes intellectual discipline, perseverance through difficulty, and self-control over distraction, is pleasing to Allah.
