What routine teaches my child to return books and games on time?

Parenting Perspective

Consistency and Visual Reminders

Teaching a child to return borrowed items on time is a practical lesson in reliability and respect for others. A successful routine begins with a dedicated space in the home for all borrowed property. You should designate a shelf or a basket specifically for library books and games borrowed from friends. When an item enters the house, it should immediately be placed in this spot when not in use. This prevents the common problem of items becoming lost under furniture or mixed with personal belongings. You can also use a simple calendar system where the return date is marked clearly. Asking your child to check this calendar every weekend helps them develop a sense of time and commitment. This habit ensures they are aware of their obligations before the deadline arrives. It transforms a vague responsibility into a visible and manageable task.

Responsibility and Natural Consequences

A routine is most effective when the child takes ownership of the process. You should encourage them to be the one who gathers the items and prepares them for return. If a child is old enough, they can even lead the walk to the library or the visit to a friend. This active participation builds a sense of pride in being a trustworthy person. You should also discuss the consequences of being late, such as fines or losing the trust of a friend. Explain that returning items on time allows others to enjoy them. This builds empathy and social awareness. If an item is late, it is helpful to let the child experience the natural result, such as paying a small fine from their own savings. This teaches them that their actions have real world impacts. Your role is to provide the structure while allowing them to practice the discipline.

Spiritual Insight

Developing a routine for returning items is a reflection of the honesty required by faith. Every borrowed item is a trust that must be guarded with care. Fulfilling these small promises prepares a child for the greater responsibilities they will face in their service to Allah Almighty.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Maaidah (5), Verse 1:

‘O you who have believed, fulfil all contracts.’

This reminds us that every agreement we make, including the promise to return a borrowed book, is a serious commitment. It teaches the child that being true to one’s word is a fundamental part of their character and spiritual life. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 2405, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The best among you are those who are best in paying off their debts.’

This teaches us that promptness in returning what belongs to others is a sign of excellence. It encourages the child to value the property of others as much as their own. By establishing these habits early, you are helping your child grow into a person of integrity. They learn that being organized is not just about avoiding trouble but about respecting the rights of people around them. This discipline becomes a source of internal strength as they mature. They will find that people trust them more because they are known for their reliability. You should remain patient and supportive as they learn to manage these duties. Every successful return is a small victory for their character development. This steady guidance ensures they understand that their conduct is a direct reflection of their values. Over time, the routine will become a natural part of their character. They will carry these lessons of honesty and punctuality into every area of their adult life. The effort you put in today builds a foundation for a life of respect and success. Steady habits lead to a peaceful home and a faithful heart for every family member.
