Spiritual Insight
Islam teaches us to approach all our daily activities, including the preparation of food, with intention and care. A rushed morning does not have to mean a mindless one. By thoughtfully providing a protein-rich breakfast, we are not only fuelling our children for the day ahead but also fulfilling our role as caregivers in a way that aligns with Islamic principles of responsibility, moderation, and gratitude for Allah’s provisions.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Maaidah (5), Verses 88:
‘And consume from that nourishment (which has been provided) for you from Allah (Almighty), (which is) clearly lawful and absolute purification; and seek piety from Allah (Almighty), in whom you believe.’
This verse reminds us that the food we consume should be both lawful (Halal) and good (Tayyib). Choosing a protein-rich, wholesome breakfast over a convenient but nutritionally poor alternative is a practical way to honour this divine instruction. It is an act of gratitude for the provisions Allah has given us, teaching our children that we show our thanks by taking care of the bodies He has entrusted to us.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3349, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few morsels to keep him going. If he must fill it, then one-third for his food, one-third for his drink, and one-third for air.’
This timeless wisdom from the Prophet ﷺ encourages moderation and mindfulness. A protein-rich breakfast aligns perfectly with this principle. It provides high-quality, efficient fuel, meaning a smaller portion can keep a child feeling satisfied for longer. This teaches them to eat for nourishment rather than for over-indulgence, respecting their body’s needs and fostering a healthy, balanced approach to food that serves them both physically and spiritually.
