Parenting Perspective
For many children today, social media can feel like the air they breathe: always present and rarely questioned. Yet, beneath the surface of constant scrolling often sits a quiet exhaustion, born from the pressure to compare and the feeling of never quite being enough. When your child takes even a small pause from this digital world, a door opens for them to experience a sense of relief. The challenge is to help them to notice that feeling and anchor it, so they learn to return to it willingly.
Even if your child initially resists, small and consistent reflections can plant a seed of awareness that silence, presence, and connection outside the screen are true sources of peace.
Awaken Reflection with Gentle Prompts
Children rarely identify subtle emotional shifts on their own. They often need guiding questions that awaken their capacity for self-reflection. After they have had a break from their devices, you might gently ask:
- ‘How do you feel in your body right now? A bit lighter, calmer, or more settled?’
- ‘Did you notice if your mind felt quieter without all the notifications?’
- ‘What did you enjoy doing with that extra time you had?’
By framing these questions with warmth and curiosity, you help your child to connect their inner state to the positive act of stepping back.
Link Breaks to Positive Alternatives
The feeling of relief becomes much clearer when the break is paired with an enjoyable replacement activity. If they spend their offline time drawing, taking a walk, or simply chatting with you, the contrast becomes more striking. You could observe, ‘I noticed you laughed more today when we were playing that game. How did that feel compared to being on your phone?’ This validates their positive shift and shows them the tangible gains of unplugging.
Reframe the Break as an Act of Empowerment
Children can sometimes view a break from social media as a form of deprivation. You can help to turn this narrative around by asking: ‘When you decided to put your phone down for a while, who was in charge you or the app?’ Helping them to see their own agency in this choice transforms the break into an act of self-control and empowerment.
Build a Pattern of Recognition
The feeling of relief grows stronger and becomes more familiar with repetition. Encourage your child to keep a small notebook or even record voice notes after their breaks. Prompts like, ‘What did I gain from being offline today?’ or ‘What was the most important thing I did in this free time?’ can help to turn a short-term feeling of relief into a long-term, valuable insight about their own digital well-being.
Spiritual Insight
Islam beautifully complements this reflection by reminding us that constant distraction pulls the heart away from serenity, whereas stepping back allows us to breathe in remembrance and clarity. Social media, in many ways, mirrors the fleeting adornments of this world. Moments away from it open a space for gratitude and a focus on what truly lasts.
Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Al Ra’ad (13), Verse 28:
‘…Indeed, it is only with the remembrance of Allah (Almighty) that one can (and does) find peace of mind and heart.’
This verse provides a profound way to explain to your child why the relief they feel is so genuine. The break they are taking is not just from screens, but from the digital noise that can block out the remembrance of God. The calm they feel echoes the natural tranquillity that is promised when the heart reorients itself towards what is real and eternal.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4100, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Indifference towards this world means not thinking that what you have in your hand is more reliable than what is in Allah Almighty’s Hand.’
This wisdom can guide your child to see their relief as more than just an accident. It is a reminder that the noise of the world and its digital distractions will fade, but the peace that is linked to the remembrance of Allah Almighty endures. By weaving these reflections together, you help your child not only to notice the feeling of relief but also to understand its sacred source. Each pause becomes a lesson: that true rest comes when our hearts step back from the clamour and step closer to presence, family, and the remembrance of Allah Almighty.
