What lessons from his childhood can help my child feel closer to him?

Parenting Perspective

Children connect most deeply with stories that reflect their own world. Sharing narratives from the early life of the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is a beautiful way to bridge the centuries, helping your child to see him not as a distant historical figure, but as someone who also experienced the wonders and challenges of being young. By focusing on his childhood, we can nurture a love for him that is personal, relatable, and deeply inspiring.

Finding Common Ground in Youth

To make his story resonate, bring his youth to life. Describe how he, too, was a child who played and laughed, but who was set apart by his exceptional character even from a young age. Share stories that highlight the qualities a child can understand and admire.

  • Talk about his profound honesty and trustworthiness, which earned him the title ‘Al-Amin’ (the Trustworthy) long before he received revelation.
  • Narrate his kindness to animals, a simple yet powerful example of his innate mercy.
  • Emphasise the respect and care he showed to his elders, particularly his uncle, Abu Talib, who raised him.

These accounts show that his beautiful character was not a sudden development but was nurtured from his earliest years, making his example feel both aspirational and accessible.

Lessons in Resilience and Divine Care

The Prophet’s ﷺ childhood was also marked by significant hardship, most notably the loss of both his parents at a very young age. This part of his life offers a profound lesson in resilience and trust in Allah’s plan. Explain to your child that Allah Almighty was preparing him for his great mission through these early tests. Frame his experience as an orphan not as a story of lack, but as a demonstration of Allah’s constant care. This teaches a child that even in moments of sadness or difficulty, they are under the loving watch of their Creator, just as the young Muhammad ﷺ was.

Spiritual Insight

The childhood of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was not an ordinary one; it was a period of divine preparation and preservation. Every event, from his orphanhood to his time spent in the desert, was part of a divine curriculum designed by Allah to forge the character of His final Messenger. Understanding this adds a layer of spiritual depth to his early life story.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ad Duha (93), Verses 6-8:

‘Did He not find you an orphan and give you shelter, and found you lost and guided you, and found you poor and made you self-sufficient…’

These beautiful verses are a direct reminder from Allah to the Prophet ﷺ of His unwavering care throughout his life, beginning with his most vulnerable years. For a family, reflecting on this passage is a source of immense comfort. It teaches a child that hardship is never a sign of abandonment. Just as Allah provided shelter, guidance, and sufficiency for the orphaned Muhammad ﷺ, He provides for every child. This instils a deep and abiding trust in Allah’s plan, showing that divine care is a constant presence, even in the face of life’s greatest challenges.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 1977, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The best of you is the one who is best to his family, and I am the best of you to my family.’

While this statement was made in his adulthood, its truth was evident from his earliest years. His excellent character was a consistent thread throughout his entire life. He was the best and most respectful child in the care of his mother, Aminah, his wet nurse, Halimah, and his grandfather and uncle. His kindness and integrity were the hallmarks of his youth. Teaching this Hadith in the context of his childhood helps a child understand that his greatness was not confined to his role as a prophet. He was the embodiment of excellence in every role, including that of a young family member. It shows that his beautiful character was a continuous reality, inspiring children to strive for that same goodness in their own family relationships.
