Parenting Perspective
Puberty is often a time of considerable confusion for young men. The once predictable voice now cracks unexpectedly, nascent facial hair begins to appear, and the body adopts a new shape that can feel foreign and awkward.1 Many boys instinctively hide these dramatic changes behind misplaced humour, withdrawn silence, or sudden irritation not because they dislike themselves, but because they feel acutely exposed and uncertain. As a committed parent, your essential role is to deliberately normalise these physical changes while carefully nurturing his confidence, profound self respect, and deep gratitude towards Allah Almighty for the unique way in which He created him.
Starting with Reassurance, Not Teasing
Even light-hearted jokes about a cracking voice or new acne can deeply intensify feelings of embarrassment. It is crucial to avoid dismissive remarks such as, “You sound funny!” or “You are finally growing up!” Instead, meet his palpable discomfort with sincere empathy: “I vividly remember that it felt strange when my body began to change, too, but it truly means you are becoming stronger and more capable.”
- Building Trust: Young men may not easily verbalise their deep insecurity, but they absolutely and deeply value reassurance. Calm, non judgemental acknowledgment of the internal and external process they are undergoing builds immediate trust and helps them realise that change is not a personal failure to hide, but a necessary and purposeful stage to grow through.
Focusing on Growth, Not Appearance
Remind your son repeatedly that these physical changes are an intentional part of Allah Almighty’s design for maturity and strength not merely something to measure against his peers. State clearly, “Everyone’s body matures differently, and Allah creates each person in the best possible way specifically for them.”
- Emphasising Character: Emphasise the skills, responsibilities, and enduring strength of character that must grow simultaneously alongside the physical body: patience, discipline, respect, and sincere humility. This crucial focus helps to shift his attention from how he looks externally to who he is authentically becoming internally.
- Self Respect as Worship: Encourage him to care for himself meticulously without vanity through rigorous hygiene, consistently healthy habits, and quiet confidence. These small, deliberate acts of self respect reinforce the fundamental Islamic idea that actively taking care of the body is an integral part of honouring Allah’s trust (Amanah).
Addressing Masculinity with Sensitivity
Puberty is also the stage when young men begin the serious process of defining what it truly means to be a “man.” Peers and media outlets may unfortunately send confusing messages that falsely link manhood with aggression or destructive dominance. As a parent, you must lovingly guide him to perceive true masculinity through the sacred lens of responsibility and genuine compassion. You can teach him, “Becoming a dignified man means learning to be gentle, to consciously protect those who are vulnerable, and to fully control your anger that is where true strength resides.”
When he truly understands that masculinity in Islam is primarily defined by akhlaq (moral character) and not merely by superficial muscles or a deep voice, he begins to fully appreciate his profound transformation without the pressure of crippling comparison.
Modelling Calm Confidence
Your consistent tone and daily example will always teach him significantly more than any formal lecture ever could. If you treat all bodily change and development as an ordinary, natural, and purposeful process, he will absorb that perspective. Fathers can share their own memories: “My voice used to crack like that too; believe me, it passes much faster than you think.” Mothers can offer encouragement that perfectly blends comfort with dignity: “You are growing into the wonderful person Allah always intended you to be every single stage of your life has its own unique beauty and purpose.”
By consistently showing calm, unwavering acceptance, you make him feel spiritually and emotionally safe in his own maturing skin.
Linking Change with Responsibility
As the physical body matures, so too does the young man’s accountability before Allah Almighty. This transition is an excellent time to gently introduce reminders about ghusl (ritual cleanliness), the importance of personal privacy, and the concept of lowering the gaze. It is essential to frame these topics not as restrictive rules, but as explicit signs of maturity and profound self respect. Say clearly, “Now that you are growing older and stronger, Allah trusts you with significant new responsibilities that is an immense honour.”
This approach successfully connects his physical development with a corresponding spiritual growth, anchoring the entire experience in purpose rather than needless, awkward embarrassment.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, the processes of physical growth and change are not merely biological events; they explicitly mark the crucial transition into moral and spiritual responsibility. The noble Quran and the established teachings of the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ treat these natural stages with profound balance and dignity, constantly reminding believers that every transformation in life is a clear sign of Divine wisdom.
Created in Perfect Design
The Quran provides a powerful corrective against self doubt, confirming the perfection of human design at every stage.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah At Tin (95), Verses 4 5:
‘Indeed, We created man in the best of stature, then We return him to the lowest of the low…’
This verse is a foundational reminder that human creation in all its stages and transformations is inherently purposeful and truly noble. The changing voice, the sudden increase in height, and the emerging physical strength are not random events; they are an explicit part of Allah’s magnificent plan for his maturity and service. Teaching your son this profound truth helps him perceive his body’s visible transformation not as awkward or flawed, but as honourable and dignified. Insecurity is then naturally replaced by deep gratitude when he fully realises that every unique phase of his growth is designed and perfected by the Best of Creators.
Strength Rooted in Character
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ completely redefined the common worldly notion of strength, centring it on internal discipline.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6114, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The strong man is not the one who overcomes others, but the one who controls himself when angry.’
This beautiful Hadith fundamentally redefines the concept of strength. As your son inevitably grows stronger physically, remind him that true, lasting strength resides in self control, patience, and kindness. It teaches him that outward physical growth must be intentionally matched by significant inner discipline the undeniable spiritual hallmark of true maturity in Islam.
As your son carefully navigates this sensitive, transformative stage, your steady, loving reassurance becomes his most reliable moral compass. When you consistently treat his bodily changes as both normal and spiritually sacred, you effectively protect his burgeoning confidence from the emotional damage of shame and external comparison.
He will learn that his voice, his height, and his physical features do not define his true worth his unwavering integrity and noble character do. You are actively helping him to gracefully move from feelings of insecurity toward a deep, internal gratitude, fully understanding that each stage of his development is a carefully planned step in Allah Almighty’s divine journey specifically designed for him.
Over time, these intentional conversations will successfully nurture a quiet, powerful strength within him the kind that is firmly rooted in faith, genuine self respect, and peaceful self assurance. He will stand taller not because of superficial measurements, but because he deeply knows who he is: a young man uniquely created by Allah Almighty, honoured in every single form, and gently guided towards true spiritual maturity by Divine mercy and profound wisdom.
