What is the healthiest way to use tech during family worship moments like Ramadan nights or Eid prep?

Parenting Perspective

Use Tech as a Tool, Not a Distraction

During special times of worship like Ramadan nights, technology should serve a family’s spiritual goals, not detract from them. Parents can set a clear intention by explaining, ‘Tonight, let’s only use our devices for things that bring us closer to Allah, like listening to a lecture or reading du’as.’ This establishes a clear boundary: that technology is here to support our worship, not compete with it

Make Its Use Interactive and Beneficial

A family can use technology creatively to enrich these occasions. For example, they could display a du’a on a shared screen for everyone to read, or listen to a short tafsir together after iftar. By using devices in ways that are both purposeful and joyful, children learn that technology can enhance an experience of worship without diminishing its sanctity.

Protect the Sacred Atmosphere

At the same time, parents should ensure there are dedicated device-free periods within these special occasions, such as during prayer or personal Quran recitation, so that the heart can remain fully present. This teaches children that while technology has a role to play, the essence of worship is undivided, mindful attention. This balance of purposeful tech use and screen-free presence is what makes these times feel truly blessed.

Spiritual Insight

Aligning with the Purpose of Ramadan

The Quran establishes Ramadan as a month centred on guidance and drawing closer to its message. Any use of technology during this time should be aligned with this core purpose, supporting reflection rather than causing distraction.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 185:

(It is) The month of Ramadan, in which was revealed the (noble) Quran; a source of absolute guidance for mankind, with an empirical exposition of its guidance and proof…

Seizing the Opportunity of Ramadan

The prophetic tradition teaches that Ramadan is a unique time when the means of good are made easy and the sources of evil are restrained. It is a special opportunity for worship that should be protected from unnecessary worldly distractions.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, 3277, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘When the month of Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained.’

Technology to Strengthen Worship

By using technology as a supportive tool, making its use interactive, and protecting sacred moments from digital intrusion, a family can find a healthy and beneficial balance. This helps children to learn that technology can be a part of their Ramadan and Eid celebrations, but only when it is used to strengthen worship, preserve presence, and invite the barakah of Allah Almighty.
