Parenting Perspective
Have a Calm Conversation
If your child lies about finishing their chores, it is important to address the situation calmly, with the goal of teaching them responsibility, honesty, and accountability. You can start by speaking with your child in a gentle manner and asking them why they did not complete the chore, and why they felt the need to lie about it. For example, you could say, ‘I noticed the chores were not finished, and I am concerned that you told me they were. Can you explain why this happened?’ This opens up a conversation where your child can share their reasons, whether they were distracted, they forgot, or they were trying to avoid the task.
Reinforce the Value of Honesty
Explain to your child that honesty is more important than avoiding consequences. Reinforce that telling the truth is always the best choice, even when they feel guilty about not finishing a task. You can say, ‘It is okay to make mistakes, but it is important to be honest about them. When you lie, it breaks trust, and that makes things more difficult in the long run.’
Guide Them to Make Amends
Once the conversation is open, guide your child in learning how to make amends. You can discuss how they can fix the situation, whether it is by completing the chore or by helping out with something else. It is important to praise them when they are honest and take responsibility for their actions, as this reinforces the importance of integrity and accountability. You might say, ‘I appreciate you telling the truth about the chore. Now, let us work together to finish it.’
Set clear expectations about honesty and responsibility moving forward and help your child to develop a system or a routine for remembering to complete their chores.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, honesty is a fundamental principle, and Allah Almighty encourages us to always speak the truth. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 42:
‘And do not mix the truth with falsehood, and do not conceal the truth, and you are fully aware (of what you are doing).’
This verse teaches us that truthfulness is essential and that concealing the truth or lying is a sin that should be avoided.
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also emphasised the importance of honesty in all aspects of life. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The best of you are those who are the best to their families.’
This Hadith reminds us that our actions, including our honesty, should reflect our character and our commitment to doing what is right, especially within the family. By teaching your child to be honest about their chores and their actions, you are helping them to align their behaviour with the Islamic values of integrity and responsibility.
