Explain Why the Words are Unacceptable 

If your child copies bad language from videos, it is important to address the situation calmly and to guide them towards more respectful language. You can start by discussing the inappropriate words or phrases they have used and explain why these words are not acceptable. You could say, ‘I understand that you may have heard that word in a video, but it is not a word we should use. It is important to speak kindly to others.’ 

Teach Positive Alternatives 

Teach your child that the language they use reflects who they are and the values they hold. Explain that using bad language can hurt others’ feelings and make them feel uncomfortable. You can say, ‘When we use hurtful words, it can make people feel bad. We should always choose words that are respectful and kind.’ It is also essential to guide your child towards positive alternatives. Help them to find ways to express themselves without using inappropriate language. For example, if they are frustrated, you can teach them to say, ‘I am really upset,’ instead of resorting to bad language. 

Set Clear Consequences 

Praise your child when they use appropriate words to express themselves, as this reinforces the idea that good communication is a sign of maturity. If your child continues to use inappropriate language, it is important to set clear consequences. For example, you might limit their access to certain videos or content that includes bad language. Consistency in reinforcing these rules will help your child to understand the importance of using respectful language. 

Spiritual Insight 

In Islam, the use of respectful language is an essential part of good character. Allah Almighty encourages us to speak with kindness and consideration in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ahzaab (33), Verse 70: 

‘O those of you, who are believers, seek piety from Allah (Almighty) and always speak with words of blatant accuracy.’ 

This verse teaches us the importance of speaking with integrity and respect, which includes avoiding harmful or inappropriate language. 

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also emphasised the importance of good speech. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 3587, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated: 

‘The best of you are those who are the best to their families.’ 

This Hadith reminds us that kindness in speech is a crucial part of building strong relationships and demonstrating good character. By guiding your child to avoid bad language and encouraging them to use respectful words, you are helping them to align with the values of Islam, fostering kindness, empathy, and respect in all their interactions.
