Parenting Perspective
Feeling overwhelmed by medical terminology is a very common experience for parents. Beneath the frustration and anxiety often lies a deep concern for your child’s well-being and a desire to make the right decisions. The rapid flow of unfamiliar words, abbreviations, and technical explanations can make it difficult to absorb information or ask questions. Recognising that this is a natural response helps shift the focus from self-judgement to proactive strategies for understanding and clarity.
Break Down the Language
Medical professionals use specialised language for precision, but it should not prevent comprehension. Your primary right is to understand your child’s care plan.
- Request Clarification Gently: Do not hesitate to pause the conversation. Parent script: ‘Could you explain that in simpler terms so I can follow?’
- Take Notes: Jot down any confusing terms or phrases and ask for a simple definition or explanation of the practical impact on your child.
Breaking down jargon into plain language helps you focus on the practical implications rather than feeling lost in the terminology.
Prepare Before and After Appointments
Preparation is key to reducing overwhelm and ensuring you retain crucial information.
- Before: Write down specific concerns, observations, or questions about your child’s development. This provides a clear agenda.
- During: Pause and ask for clarification whenever a term is unclear.
- Afterwards: Summarise the discussion in your own words, either alone or with a partner, to process the information. Parent script: ‘Let us go over what we discussed together so we are clear on next steps.’
Use Visual and Practical Aids
Sometimes understanding grows faster when you connect abstract terms to tangible examples.
- Request Demonstration: Ask the clinician to demonstrate exercises, use simple diagrams, or provide videos illustrating activities or milestones.
- Connect to Home: If a clinician mentions ‘pincer grip development,’ watching a demonstration of the child holding a coin or bead can make the concept clear and help you integrate that activity into home routines.
Focus on Actionable Steps
Even if you do not fully understand every term, focus on the immediate, practical steps you can take to support your child’s growth.
- Ask the professional to outline the one or two main exercises or strategies you should focus on immediately at home. Parent script: ‘Which one activity should we focus on this week to help my child progress?’
- Implementing small, targeted actions reinforces your child’s skills and builds your confidence as an active participant in their development.
Spiritual Insight
Islam emphasises the pursuit of knowledge, reflection, and seeking guidance with patience. Feeling overwhelmed by complex medical terminology does not indicate weakness but an opportunity to apply wisdom, seek clarification, and act responsibly for your child’s welfare.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Mujadila (58), Verses 11:
‘Allah will raise those of you who have believed and those who were given knowledge, in degrees. And Allah is aware of what you do…’
This verse reassures parents that striving to understand and learn, even in moments of confusion or challenge, is recognised and valued by Allah Almighty. Seeking clarity in appointments, asking questions, and carefully implementing advice is part of fulfilling this responsibility.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 224, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The seeking of knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim.’
This Hadith highlights that pursuing understanding is a form of worship and responsibility. By preparing for appointments, taking notes, asking questions, and implementing guidance, parents actively fulfil this obligation. Every small step taken to understand the medical guidance and support your child’s growth is meaningful, both practically and spiritually.
