Parenting Perspective
It is natural for parents to feel profound frustration when close relatives repeatedly forget their child’s severe food allergy. However, it is important to reframe the situation: repeated errors are often due to forgetfulness or a lack of understanding of the severity, rather than intentional neglect. The parental task is to establish safety protocols with kind, persistent clarity.
Establishing Clear, Repetitive Reminders
To counteract habitual forgetfulness, parents must introduce visual and timely reminders that integrate into the relatives’ environment when they visit. This includes creating visual aids that are impossible to miss. For instance, parents can use sticky notes or brightly labelled containers if their child is bringing food to a relative’s house, or place short, printed instructions on the fridge door or kitchen counter for clarity, especially during shared cooking. Additionally, proactive communication is essential: parents should send a short message or text before every family meal, kindly but firmly restating the boundary. This message should read, for example: ‘Just a quick reminder about [child’s name]’s allergy—we will bring safe food for them, thank you.’ Parents must maintain a calm, factual tone, ensuring the message is never accusatory.
Reinforcing Positive Behaviour and Boundaries
To shift the dynamic, involve your child in thanking relatives who remember and are careful; gratitude reinforces awareness far more effectively than criticism. If mistakes continue or the risk level remains too high, parents must gently enforce stronger boundaries. This could mean choosing to eat before visiting or bringing a full, pre-prepared meal for the child and perhaps the immediate family. Parents must clearly explain that their child’s health must be the priority, reminding the relatives that safety is love, even when it requires temporary measures that may be misunderstood. Your consistent, kind persistence serves as the most effective long-term education.
Spiritual Insight
The Islamic spiritual tradition views the relationship between believers as one of brotherhood and sisterhood, demanding that conflicts—even small ones like recurring forgetfulness—be managed with wisdom, kindness, and a sincere effort to maintain unity (silat ar rahim).
The Quran instructs believers to resolve conflicts and fear Allah Almighty so that they may receive His mercy. When dealing with family members who struggle with allergies, the parent must balance the need for safety with the command for unity. Correcting family kindly is the path that preserves both the child’s safety and the spiritual bond of the relatives.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujurat (49), Verse 10:
‘The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy…’
This reminds parents that the fundamental relationship is one of brotherhood, obligating them to approach the issue with softness and patience, trusting that their sincere effort will attract Divine mercy and assistance.
The Prophetic teachings highlight that gentleness and kindness are integral traits of a true believer. This wisdom applies directly to the challenging dynamic of dealing with forgetful family members. Harshness will alienate; only kind persistence will lead to lasting change.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 41, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe.’
This Hadith confirms that the parent’s continued, gentle efforts to remind and educate are the most prophetic and effective path. Kind persistence, not anger, is the spiritual tool that ultimately helps others remember what matters most—the love and safety of the child.
