Children typically view cheap food as a sign of clever, successful shopping, not as a potential indicator of a system of exploitation or imbalance. To help them develop an ethical and conscientious understanding, you must begin the lesson by focusing on the universal principle of fairness. 

Establishing the Principle of Fairness 

Start by appealing to their innate sense of justice with a relatable analogy. Ask them: ‘If someone worked very hard to complete a task but was paid very little for their effort, would that situation feel fair to you?’ Once the child affirms the importance of fairness, you can gently link this concept to the food supply chain: ‘Sometimes, when food is priced excessively cheaply, it means that someone else—perhaps a distant farmer, a field worker, or a factory employee—was not treated or compensated fairly for their crucial labour.’ 

This approach frames the ethical dilemma around human dignity and justice rather than abstract economic concepts. It teaches that fairness is a necessary component of halal (lawful) consumption. 

Building Ethical Awareness and Empowerment 

Instead of invoking guilt or anxiety, your primary objective should be to build awareness and empowerment. Involve your child in conscious purchasing decisions. 

• Visit local markets and discuss the importance of supporting local communities. 

• Talk about the concept of a fair wage and what it means for a working family. 

• Encourage them to select items that clearly carry ‘fair trade‘ or ‘locally made‘ labels, explaining the positive impact of these choices. 

Explain that choosing to buy justly supports kindness, honesty, and deep respect for Allah Almighty’s blessings and the efforts of others. The ultimate goal is to make acting with compassion feel empowering—a valuable contribution to the greater community—not a heavy burden or a restrictive limitation. When they see their choice as an act of justice, they view the cost not as a penalty, but as the true value of fairness. 

Spiritual Insight 

Islam provides a clear and profound framework for economic and social justice, defining fairness and balance as direct divine commands that apply to all commercial transactions. 

The Quran establishes the fundamental principle of the balance that Allah Almighty has set in the universe, applying this cosmic order to human dealings and commerce. 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Rahman (55), Verses 7–9: 

‘And the heaven He raised high, and He set the balance, so that you do not transgress within the balance. And establish weight in justice and do not make deficient the balance…’ 

This ayah powerfully captures the divine principle of absolute fairness—the need for balance in all dealings, including trade, commerce, and labour compensation. It teaches that establishing justice in business is not merely a secular requirement, but a profound act of worship (ibadah). When children understand this, they realise that cheapness gained by exploiting others is a transgression against the very cosmic balance Allah has established. 

The Hadith provides a practical, explicit instruction on upholding the rights and dignity of workers, linking timely payment directly to their welfare. 

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2443, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘Give the worker his wages before his sweat dries.’ 

This hadith explicitly connects food ethics to the fundamental principle of human dignity. Teaching this Prophetic example helps children realise that gaining cheapness at the expense of a worker’s just compensation is not a blessing, but a profound breach of the fairness that Islam strictly forbids. By instilling this respect for labour, you are teaching them to seek barakah in their provision, knowing that food consumed has a clear, just, and honest origin.
