What helps them see happiness itself as a form of Rizq?

Parenting Perspective

It is a profound and beautiful truth you wish to convey: that the feeling of happiness, the genuine, deep sense of well-being, is not an emotion generated by external circumstances but is a precious form of spiritual provision (Rizq) granted by Allah Almighty. You observe the constant pressure of the world urging your child to seek joy in acquisition, popularity, or temporary thrills, and you wisely worry that they may fail to recognise the inner treasures already available to them. Your goal is to give them the spiritual literacy to see their own contentment as a magnificent gift from the Creator.

Children often confuse joy (which is sudden, external, and purchased) with happiness which is sustained, internal, and spiritual. To help your child make this distinction, you can establish routines that constantly attribute their internal well-being back to the Divine Source, fostering genuine gratitude for the state of their heart.

The Source of Contentment

The greatest way to highlight happiness as Rizq is to show that it is independent of material circumstances. You can use gentle, observant conversations to draw attention to the moments when they feel most settled, secure, or joyful, especially when those moments cost nothing.

You might pause during a quiet time of family prayer or when sitting peacefully together and ask: ‘Do you feel that lovely, settled feeling in your chest right now? That feeling of peace and security, that is Inner Rizq. We cannot buy that feeling in any shop, and no amount of money can guarantee it. It is a provision from Allah, a gift He sends directly to your heart.’ This conscious naming of the feeling as ‘Inner Rizq’ or ‘Heart’s Provision’ helps them disconnect it from a price tag.

You can also use the routine of contrast. Gently point out instances, perhaps from observing public figures or even historical figures, where immense wealth failed to purchase peace. You could say, ‘That person had everything the world could offer, but they struggled with anxiety and sleeplessness. The sleeplessness was a sign that the Rizq of tranquility had been withheld. This shows us that the peace in our hearts is worth more than all the gold in the world.’

The Routine of Active Gratitude

Make a conscious routine of verbalising gratitude that focuses on emotional and spiritual gifts rather than possessions. When your child succeeds in a task, or when they manage a challenging situation with patience, you can reframe the success as a blessing of character.

  • Focus on Character: Instead of saying, ‘You did well,’ you might say: ‘Alhamdulillah, Allah Almightygave you the provision of patience to finish that difficult task. That patience is a greater gift than the task itself.’
  • Focus on Relationships: When the family laughs together or resolves a conflict quickly, you can say: ‘What a wonderful gift of harmony we have. That deep connection is a sustaining Rizq from Allah Almightythat feeds our souls.’ This teaches them to view kindness, patience, and love as the most valuable provisions they receive daily.

The true goal is to ensure that your child sees their capacity for contentment, their ability to be kind, and the peace they feel as a magnificent grace. This understanding builds an immunity to the despair that comes from chasing endless external validations.

Spiritual Insight

The reason happiness is considered the highest form of Rizq in Islam is because it is synonymous with contentment , which is a spiritual state of absolute sufficiency and reliance upon the Creator. This blessing, often referred to as Sakinah (tranquillity), is the only provision that remains intact regardless of external worldly circumstances. It is the signature of a heart that is truly connected to its Source.

The pursuit of spiritual happiness is not a frivolous quest; it is a fundamental act of faith guided by the Quran, which defines the path to the heart’s provision.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al-Ra’d (13), Verse 28:

‘Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah Almightyhearts are assured.’

This verse provides the definitive diagnosis and cure for the heart’s disquiet. You can explain to your child that their heart’s natural state is assurance and certainty, and that this state is achieved specifically through the remembrance of Allah Almighty (Dhikr). When they feel worried, agitated, or unhappy, they are experiencing a lack of this spiritual provision. The solution, therefore, is not to look outward for a purchase or a popularity boost, but to turn inward to Dhikr and prayer. This practice proves that happiness is a provision already guaranteed to the believer, accessible through faith, not through currency.

Furthermore, holy Prophet Muhammad  taught us to seek this ultimate provision by redefining the concept of richness itself, placing contentment far above material accumulation.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2963, that holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Look at those who are beneath you and do not look at those who are above you, for it is more suitable that you should not consider as less the blessing of Allah Almightyupon you.’

This Hadith provides the most essential discipline for maintaining the provision of happiness. You can explain to your child that holy Prophet Muhammad  is teaching them to guard their spiritual gaze. When they look at someone with less material wealth, they immediately recognise the immense, uncountable blessings of Allah Almightyin their own lives: their health, their functioning mind, their security. If they allow themselves to constantly look at those who have more, they will feel poor and deprive themselves of the provision of contentment. This spiritual discipline secures the happiness of the heart, transforming gratitude into an active shield against worldly envy and anxiety.

By fostering this understanding, you ensure that your child sees their inner peace, their joy, and their contentment not as accidents of good fortune, but as deliberate, invaluable, and constant forms of Rizq to be guarded through faith and gratitude.
