Parenting Perspective
Adolescence is a critical stage where young people are actively defining their identity, and they frequently allow their sense of personal significance to be dictated by fleeting external factors such as recognition, social status, and public visibility. To effectively redirect their attention toward the profound and enduring perspective of the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, parents must clarify that within the Islamic framework, true greatness is not measured by temporary fame or worldly titles, but rather by one’s consistent usefulness and humble service to the wider community.
Establishing the Prophetic Standard of Humility
The character of the Prophet ﷺ provides the ultimate alternative to the world’s ceaseless obsession with personal status and self-promotion. It is essential to share captivating and accessible narratives that illustrate his profound humility in action. Recount stories detailing how, despite his elevated station, he personally mended his own worn clothing, took the initiative to feed the poor and hungry, and fully embodied his philosophy by declaring, ‘The leader of a people is their servant.’ These examples demonstrate to teenagers that the achievement of the highest moral and spiritual rank is intrinsically linked to the deliberate act of lowering oneself to serve others. This principle contrasts sharply with the modern narrative that insists one must accumulate power to be worthy of respect.
Integrating Service as a Form of Sunnah
To ensure this teaching is not merely theoretical, it must be embedded practically and consistently within the family routine as an extension of Sunnah. Actively encourage your teenagers to engage in structured, meaningful service projects that benefit others without seeking personal spotlight. Such activities could include formal volunteering at a charity, taking up the responsibility of mentoring younger students in a subject where they possess proficiency, or regularly contributing to the cleanliness and maintenance of communal spaces within the neighbourhood or Masjid. The crucial message to reinforce is that every single unseen act of kindness they perform—the help offered privately, the assistance given without expectation of thanks—echoes the very essence of prophetic leadership. Genuine leadership is always found in the quiet, dedicated action that receives no applause.
Spiritual Insight
The entirety of the Islamic ethos is founded upon principles of selfless service, cooperation in goodness, and deep humility. This foundation establishes that the frantic pursuit of worldly status or fleeting human praise is inherently dangerous to one’s spiritual standing. The life and teachings of the Prophet ﷺ stand as the undeniable proof that authentic closeness to Allah Almighty is achieved through disciplined servitude and moral excellence.
The Quran establishes a definitive command regarding mutual support, framing successful, ethical community life around the concept of piety and active goodness (Birr and Taqwa). This foundational instruction sets the moral framework for all acts of helpfulness and communal leadership.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ma’idah (5), Verse 2:
‘And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression…’
This divine instruction confirms that true leadership and enduring value are found exclusively in the service to causes defined by goodness. When teens are taught to apply this verse directly through their service projects, they are participating in the Divine system where effort towards the good of the community is fundamentally rewarded, entirely irrespective of whether that effort gains temporary worldly renown or public acclaim. Their obedience to this command places them on a morally superior path.
The Prophet ﷺ provided direct spiritual counsel, connecting the internal virtues of humility and forgiveness to the assurance of increased honour and elevated rank bestowed directly by Allah Almighty. This teaching offers a profound contrast to the world’s method of achieving status through self-aggrandisement.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2588, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Charity does not decrease wealth. No one forgives an injustice but that Allah will increase him in honour. And no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah but that Allah will raise his rank.’
This potent prophetic statement clarifies the spiritual economy of Islam. It demonstrates that the actions the world often perceives as weakness—such as being humble or forgiving an offence—are precisely the actions that guarantee an increase in honour and an elevation of rank in the eternal realm. When parents celebrate acts of selfless help, forgiveness, and service as the family’s greatest achievements, teenagers begin to fundamentally appreciate service and humility as the highest Sunnah success, correctly aligning their ambitions with the standard set by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. This focus secures their attention on the eternal reward rather than transient human praise.
