Parenting Perspective
Children often think that trusting in Allah Almighty (Tawakkul) means waiting for things to happen without any effort. Yet true trust is the opposite; it is working consistently while believing that Allah Almighty alone controls the outcome. Teaching your child that persistence is a form of Tawakkul helps them to understand that faith and action walk hand in hand. This understanding makes them stronger, calmer, and more hopeful when they face challenges.
Define Tawakkul as Action with Trust
Explain that Tawakkul is not about giving up; it is about giving your best effort and leaving the rest to Allah Almighty. You might say, ‘We keep trying because Allah Almighty loves those who strive, and we trust Him to bring what is best for us’. When your child learns that effort is part of faith, they begin to see that giving up early is not a sign of humility, but is a failure to trust completely.
Praise Perseverance as an Act of Worship
When your child tries something repeatedly, whether it is practising their handwriting, memorising Surahs, or improving their manners, acknowledge their effort. You can say, ‘Every time you try again, Allah Almighty is watching your effort and rewarding you for it’. By connecting persistence with divine attention, you turn ordinary perseverance into a form of spiritual motivation.
Share Examples of Steadfastness
Tell stories of the Prophets who kept working with immense patience and hope. The example of Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him), who preached for centuries, or holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who faced years of hardship but never gave up, are powerful lessons. Explain that they did not rely on seeing immediate results; they relied completely on Allah Almighty. This helps your child to see persistence as a reflection of faith, not as mere stubbornness.
Model Calm Determination in Your Life
When you are faced with a difficulty, such as financial stress, work setbacks, or delays, try to show consistency and patience instead of despair. You can say aloud, ‘We will keep trying our best, and Allah Almighty will open a way for us’. Children who witness this composure learn that steady effort, coupled with trust, is the very heart of Tawakkul.
By combining hope with effort, your child learns that persistence is not about controlling outcomes; it is about staying faithful while Allah Almighty unfolds His perfect plan.
Spiritual Insight
Noble Quran and the Sunnah of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teach that a believer’s strength lies in striving with unwavering trust. Tawakkul is not found in waiting passively but in continuing to work earnestly, knowing that Allah Almighty never lets sincere effort go unrewarded.
Striving with Divine Support
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Imran (3), Verse 159:
‘Then when you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allah . Indeed, Allah loves those who rely upon Him…’
This verse shows that our trust follows our action, it does not replace it. Teach your child that Allah Almighty loves those who plan, work, and then rely on His wisdom for the final outcome. Persistence becomes an act of trust, showing a deep confidence in the timing and justice of Allah Almighty.
The Prophetic Praise for Effort and Trust
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, 4164, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘If you were to rely upon Allah Almighty with the reliance He is due, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds: they go out hungry in the morning and return full in the evening.’
This Hadith beautifully illustrates that true Tawakkul includes movement and effort. The birds leave their nests, they make an effort, and then they receive their sustenance from Allah Almighty. Teaching your child this Hadith helps them to see that persistence is not a sign of impatience; it is faith in motion. It means continuing to try while resting your heart in the care of Allah Almighty.
Encourage your child to repeat this prayer: ‘Ya Allah Almighty, help me to do my best and to trust in Your plan’. Explain that every time they keep going despite a difficulty, they are showing their Tawakkul.
Over time, they will learn that persistence is not stubbornness; it is a quiet faith that refuses to quit. They will understand that the help of Allah Almighty often arrives through our consistency, and that every small act of continued effort brings them closer to both success and serenity. In that realisation, their hard work becomes a living expression of their trust.
