Parenting Perspective
Every parent holds a deep desire for their child to understand that true, lasting success lies not only in the visible results of their actions but in the unseen purity of their intention and the sincerity of their effort. Yet we are raising our children in a world that often measures worth through a narrow and superficial lens, one that celebrates high grades, social popularity, and outward success above all else. To teach them that Allah Almighty values sincerity, or ikhlas, we must gently guide them towards the profound and comforting truth that an effort performed with a pure heart is never wasted in His sight, even if the worldly outcome appears small or insignificant. This understanding is the foundation of a resilient and humble character, one that is free from the anxieties of comparison and is anchored in the peace of divine acceptance.
Shifting the Focus from Outcome to Intention
The journey begins by consciously shifting the way we praise and acknowledge our children’s endeavours. Instead of reserving our greatest enthusiasm for a victory or a perfect score, we can learn to celebrate the beautiful process of sincere striving. When your child gives their absolute best but does not achieve the result they had hoped for, you can comfort them by saying, ‘I am so proud of the honest and dedicated way you worked. Allah Almighty saw your sincere effort, and that is what He loves and rewards’. This teaches them a fundamental principle of our faith: that the final results of all our affairs belong to Allah Almighty, while our responsibility lies in the purity of our effort. As they hear this message consistently, they will learn to value their own intention far more than the final outcome, building a character that is resilient in the face of both success and failure.
The Power of Resilient Stories
Children internalise values most deeply through stories that capture their imagination and touch their hearts. Share with them narratives of resilience and unwavering faith from the lives of the prophets and the righteous. You can tell them about Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him), who preached with unwavering patience for centuries, his success measured not by the number of his followers, but by his steadfast obedience and sincerity before his Lord. You can also share personal stories from your own life, moments when you tried with complete sincerity and, perhaps much later, something unexpectedly good came from that effort. These examples make the concept of sincerity feel real, relatable, and deeply inspiring. They show that Allah Almighty blesses sincere effort in ways that are often unseen and beyond our immediate comprehension, nurturing a long term trust in His divine plan.
The Joy of Unseen Goodness
You can guide your child to experience the inner peace that comes from performing good deeds purely for the sake of Allah Almighty, without any desire for recognition from others. Encourage them to engage in small, hidden acts of kindness, such as quietly feeding the birds, helping a younger sibling without being asked, or giving a small amount of their pocket money to charity without announcing it. Afterwards, you can create a quiet moment for reflection, discussing how such actions bring a special kind of contentment to the heart precisely because they are a secret between them and Allah Almighty. When a child begins to connect the feeling of sincerity with a sense of inner joy, their motivation for doing good slowly and beautifully shifts. It moves away from a dependence on people’s praise and towards a deep and satisfying desire for divine approval. This early understanding builds a character that is not only resilient and humble but is also rich with an inner life that is connected to its Creator.
Spiritual Insight
Beyond the tangible achievements and the recognition of the world, Islam teaches a profound truth: sincerity is the secret ingredient that gives our lives their true value and meaning. Allah Almighty measures our hearts, not our worldly successes. When a child learns that barakah, or divine blessing, follows sincerity, they begin to view every single act, whether it is their study, their kindness to others, or their future work, as a sacred and precious opportunity to please their Creator. Their entire life becomes a canvas for beautiful intentions.
When Pure Intentions Multiply Reward
Noble Quran assures us that every sincere effort made in the cause of Allah Almighty is seen, valued, and met with His divine guidance and support. It is a promise that our striving is never in vain.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ankabut (29), Verse 69:
‘And those who strive for Us We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good…’
This beautiful verse shows that a sincere effort never goes unnoticed by our Lord. Allah Almighty promises His divine companionship and His guidance to those who strive in His cause, regardless of the worldly outcome. Teaching this verse to your children helps them to realise that their role is to do their very best with a pure heart, and to leave the results of their efforts to the perfect wisdom of Allah Almighty. True success, in the Islamic paradigm, is measured by the purity of our effort and our steadfastness on the path, not by the illusion of perfection.
The Divine Gaze upon the Heart
The teachings of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ beautifully capture the essence of ikhlas, reminding us that the divine gaze is directed towards our inner reality, not our outward show.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, 4143, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Allah Almighty does not look at your forms or your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.’
This profound Hadith teaches us that Allah Almighty values our inner truth over any external appearance.
When shared with a child, it helps them to understand that being sincere in their actions, such as doing their homework with honesty, helping others without seeking to show off, or admitting their mistakes with humility, is far more beloved to Allah Almighty than any grand performance that is empty of a pure intention. This understanding plants the seeds of both humility and a deep, unshakeable self respect in their heart. As they internalise this truth, children become less anxious about comparing themselves to others and more focused on their own inner growth and spiritual journey.
