Parenting Perspective
Bullying is one of the most painful realities a child can experience; it wounds the heart before it bruises the skin. For parents, ensuring that an Islamic school handles such behaviour with wisdom, justice, and compassion is essential. Bullying can only be properly addressed when discipline is sincerely guided by prophetic principles: gentleness in correction, unwavering fairness in judgment, and profound mercy in the outcome. A school that is deeply rooted in prophetic guidance does not simply punish wrongdoing; it actively works to heal hearts, restore dignity, and teach empathy as a form of worship (ibadah).
Observe the School’s Tone Around Behaviour
When you visit the school, listen very closely to how the staff speak about the issue of discipline. Do they consistently emphasise harsh punishment or genuine personal growth and character development? Schools that are truly inspired by the Sunnah (Prophetic way) treat bullying as both a severe behavioural issue and a profound moral concern. They focus intently not just on immediately stopping the harmful act but on actively transforming the flawed mindset behind it.
You should ask the following probing questions:
- ‘How specifically do you address unkindness or the serious issue of bullying among students?’
- ‘What clear, restorative steps are taken to help both the victim and the one who caused the harm?’
Schools that sincerely draw from prophetic ethics will consistently mention calm mediation, self-reflection, and nasihah (gentle, sincere advice). Their aim is never to humiliate but to educate, understanding that the core goal is the purification of character (tazkiyah), not mere retribution.
Notice How Teachers Model Respect and Restraint
Children learn precisely how to treat one another by closely watching how the adults in their lives treat them. Observe whether the teachers consistently use respect even in moments of needed correction. Do they quickly raise their voices, or do they guide firmly but with a visible calmness?
When students witness authentic fairness and patience in their teachers, they naturally begin to mirror those same noble qualities with their peers. Schools that integrate prophetic guidance ensure that all authority is used for protection, not for power, where teachers discipline with mercy, never with anger.
Ask About Preventive Measures, Not Just Responses
A truly prophetic approach does not passively wait for harm to occur; it actively cultivates empathy and brotherhood proactively within the school culture. Ask the school administration:
- ‘How do you systematically teach students about compassion and mutual respect before specific issues even arise?’
- ‘Do you regularly hold engaging lessons or assemblies focused on kindness, empathy, and the importance of forgiveness?’
When children are taught that hurting another heart deeply displeases Allah Almighty, prevention naturally becomes the most powerful form of protection. A truly prophetic environment consciously builds conscience first, fully knowing that sound moral education is always stronger and more enduring than simple, fear-based punishment.
Observe How Accountability and Forgiveness Are Balanced
In schools that are consistently guided by prophetic ethics, both justice and mercy must healthily coexist. The one who engages in bullying is rightly held accountable for their actions, but they are never publicly shamed. They are sincerely encouraged to apologise, to proactively make amends, and to deeply reflect on the harm they have caused. The victim is comforted, reassured of safety, and the entire community learns a valuable lesson about compassion and respect. Ask exactly how the school helps both parties to effectively rebuild trust after a serious incident. Where reconciliation and deep personal growth are prioritised, you can be assured that prophetic guidance is truly alive in practice.
Spiritual Insight
The noble Quran and the Sunnah of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ provide a comprehensive moral framework for constructively dealing with harm between people. The prophetic model consistently teaches that dignity, fairness, and fundamental kindness must never be sacrificed, even when justly addressing wrongdoing. Therefore, addressing bullying is not only about discipline; it is centrally about $tazkiyah$ (purification) and $ihsan$ (excellence in conduct).
The Quranic Command to Stand for Justice with Mercy
Allah Almighty states in noble Quran at Surah Al Maaidah (5), Verse 8:
‘You who are believers, become steadfast (in your devotion) to Allah (Almighty), corroborating all of that which is just; and never let your hatred of any nation prevent you from being just, – let justice prevail, as that is very close to attaining piety; and attained piety from Allah (Almighty), indeed, Allah is All Cognisant of all your actions (in the worldly life).’
This verse fundamentally teaches that the pursuit of justice must never be clouded by personal emotion. Schools that sincerely live by this profound principle address bullying fairly and consistently, ensuring that all necessary voices are fully heard: the voice of the hurt, the voice of the hurting, and the voice of the witnesses. Crucially, however, they temper justice with compassion, knowing that the ultimate goal is the healing of hearts, not merely harming reputations.
Holy Prophet’s ﷺ Teaching on Compassion and Brotherhood
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1927, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The believer is the one from whose tongue and hand the people are safe, and the Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the other Muslims are safe.‘
This fundamental Hadith defines the very essence of non-harm and profound compassion. It is the clearest prophetic foundation for addressing the problem of bullying, reminding all students that intentionally hurting others severely contradicts the very core meaning of faith. When schools actively teach and embody this principle, they successfully transform their anti-bullying policy into a moral commitment: a firm, divine duty to protect others as an act of obedience to Allah Almighty.
When you visit a school, observe its visible calmness in conflict and its genuine fairness in correction. Listen for consistent reminders of mercy and accountability, not mere control and punishment. You will immediately know that prophetic guidance is truly present when even student mistakes are handled with dignity, and when forgiveness and reconciliation become an integral, expected part of the discipline process. At home, you must actively echo this exact same principle. Teach your child to be the one who stands up for others, comforts the hurt, and forgives without arrogance. Explain that every single act of kindness draws them nearer to Allah Almighty, while every deliberate act of harm distances them from His infinite mercy. A school that addresses bullying through prophetic guidance raises not just well behaved students, but profoundly compassionate believers: children who protect others because they sincerely love for their brothers and sisters what they love for themselves, and who truly understand that their greatest strength lies in mercy, restraint, and justice guided by the light of faith.
