Parenting Perspective
Financial uncertainty can shake a parent’s confidence, but it also offers one of the most powerful lessons a child can ever witness: faith in action. When you remain patient and composed through periods of uncertainty, your child learns that peace comes not from having control, but from having trust in Allah Almighty. Modelling patience (sabr) and trust (tawakkul) during hardship transforms financial stress into a classroom of faith, where your calm becomes your child’s emotional stability.
Be Honest Without Spreading Fear
Children can sense when their parents are worried, but they do not need to carry the full burden of adult stress. It is important to speak with a calm honesty, saying something like, ‘Things are a bit uncertain right now, but Allah Almighty always takes care of us’. This simple reassurance teaches them that even in times of instability, there is a Protector. Avoid negative talk about money; replace any sense of panic with prayer, and complaints with quiet reflection. Your composure teaches that while our control is limited, our trust in Allah Almighty can be limitless.
Model Patience Through Your Actions
Patience is not just about waiting; it is about how you wait. Continue performing your daily routines with a sense of steadiness. Cook meals together, smile often, and pray as a family. This shows that your faith continues even when a period of ease seems to pause. When your child sees that hardship does not change your discipline or your character, they learn that consistency is an integral part of sabr.
Turn Anxiety into Prayer and Effort
When you feel worried, you can verbalise a shift in focus. For example, ‘Instead of worrying, let us make a prayer for divine blessing and then do our best’. Involve your child in hopeful action, such as planning a budget wisely, giving a small amount in charity, or praying two units of the prayer of need (Salat al Hajah). This shows that trust is not passive; it is an active reliance on the guidance of Allah Almighty while doing what is within your control.
Reflect on Past Blessings
During times of uncertainty, remind your family of previous moments when Allah Almighty provided for you in unexpected ways. You could say, ‘Do you remember when we were worried last time, and then Allah Almighty made a way for us?’. Such reflections strengthen a child’s memory of divine reliability. Gratitude reinforces faith more powerfully than reasoning ever could.
Through your composure, gratitude, and continued effort, you show your child that patience during uncertainty is not a sign of resignation; it is worship in motion.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, patience and trust are considered among the greatest acts of worship, especially in times of hardship. Financial tests are not punishments but are opportunities to deepen our reliance on Allah Almighty. Noble Quran and the Sunnah remind believers that Allah Almighty provides in unseen ways when our hearts remain steadfast.
The Promise of Provision Through Reliance
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Talaq (65), Verses 2-3:
‘And whoever fears Allah Almighty, He will make for him a way out. And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah Almighty then He is sufficient for him…’
This verse captures the essence of tawakkul: our provision is written, though it may be unseen. Teaching this to your child reminds them that uncertainty is never the absence of provision; it is the space where the mercy of Allah Almighty reveals itself. When they see your trust reflected in your calm actions, they understand that faith brings peace long before relief arrives.
The Prophetic Example of Calm Reliance
It is recorded in Musnad Ahmad, 205, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘If you were to rely upon Allah Almighty with the reliance He is due, you would be given provision as the birds are given; they go out hungry in the morning and return full in the evening.’
This Hadith paints a powerful picture of pure trust. The birds exert their effort daily but never panic about what tomorrow may bring. Teaching this image to your child helps them to see that tawakkul does not mean doing nothing; it means working faithfully while knowing that Allah Almighty controls the results.
When you model patience and trust during financial uncertainty, your home becomes a sanctuary of faith. Tell your child, ‘We may not know what tomorrow brings, but we know Who brings tomorrow’.
Over time, they will learn that true security is not found in savings or salaries, but in a complete surrender to the wisdom of Allah Almighty. Your calm will become their confidence, your prayer will become their anchor, and your trust will become their lifelong inheritance: a faith that stands firm even when the ground seems to shift.
