What helps me defend them gently from relatives’ remarks?

Parenting Perspective

Relatives often speak from a place of affection, yet they sometimes use words that may unintentionally cut deep. A casual remark about a child’s height, weight, complexion, or behaviour may feel harmless to the speaker, but for the child, it can quickly become a damaging seed of self-doubt. Parents frequently feel conflicted: should they firmly protect their child or avoid potential conflict out of respect for the relative? The effective middle path lies in a gentle, protective guidance that preserves the child’s dignity without creating unnecessary hostility.

Acknowledge the Remark Without Amplifying It

When a relative makes a potentially hurtful comment, it is best to avoid silence, which might signal agreement to your child. However, you should also avoid a sharp defensiveness that could escalate tension. A soft, immediate redirect can be immensely helpful: “Alhamdulillah, every child grows and develops in their own beautiful way.” This response quietly affirms your child’s intrinsic worth while simultaneously signalling to the relative that comparisons are unnecessary and unwanted.

Shield Your Child with Perspective

Later, when you are in private, take time to explain to your child that people often speak without truly realising the weight or potential impact of their words.

  • Parent Script: “Your auntie’s words were just her opinion; they do not define you. Allah Almighty has made you exactly as you should be.”

By naming the remark as merely a perspective rather than an established truth, you effectively loosen its hold and return the emotional control back to your child.

Build Resilience Before the Gathering

If you are aware that certain relatives are likely to make comparative comments, prepare your child in advance of the gathering. Encourage them with empowering phrases that they can hold inside their mind:

  • “My worth is not measured by the comments of others.”
  • “Allah Almighty created me with the utmost care.”

Giving them this mental armour helps them stand steady and emotionally secure when critical remarks inevitably arise.

Model Gentle Boundaries

At times, relatives require a polite and kind reminder about acceptable conversational limits. You can gently shift the tone with kindness and respect: “We try not to compare the children in front of them; it helps them stay more confident.” Such clear statements subtly defend your child’s emotional space without shaming the speaker, and crucially, they show your child that you will always thoughtfully advocate for them.

Focus on Strengths in the Same Moment

If a relative says something critical, such as, “He is so thin,” you can immediately respond warmly by saying, “Yes, and he is so energetic, mā shā Allāh.” This technique quickly transforms a critique into a celebration. Your child sees you as a staunch ally, learns a practical way to reframe negativity, and feels profoundly secure in your support.

Spiritual Insight

Family interactions offer an important arena in which to practise patience, kindness, and gentle correction. Islam teaches us that words carry immense weight, but also that believers are guided to respond with dignity and wisdom in all circumstances.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Isra (17), Verse 53:

‘And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces dissension among them. Indeed, Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy…’

This verse provides a clear reminder that our replies should always be measured, calm, and constructive, aiming to protect familial relationships while upholding the truth.

The highest standard of conduct involves guarding one’s tongue and heart.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 41, that the holy Prophet Muhammad said:

‘A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the other Muslims are safe.’

By embodying this fundamental teaching, parents can successfully create a safe shield around their children, ensuring that words from others do not penetrate and harm their hearts. Defending them gently but firmly shows children that their inherent worth is not open for debate. It also models how to live with dignity: guarding one’s tongue, standing for truth, and trusting that Allah Almighty honours every child exactly as He created them.
