What habits link supporting others to seeking Allah Almighty’s pleasure?

Parenting Perspective

Children often enjoy helping others, but they may not always understand why it matters. They might help to earn praise or feel good about themselves, but the deeper purpose of support in Islam is to seek Allah Almighty’s pleasure. When children learn that every act of kindness is a form of worship, their motivation shifts from recognition to reward from their Creator. Teaching this connection builds sincerity, humility, and lasting compassion.

Habits for Sincere Service

  • Begin With Intention Before Action: Help your child form the habit of starting every act of care with a pure niyyah (intention). Before helping, remind them to pause and whisper, ‘I am doing this for Allah Almighty.’ This small moment changes the act from social courtesy to a spiritual offering.
  • Notice and Name Everyday Acts of Service: Children often overlook how many ways they already serve others sharing food, comforting a friend, helping with chores, or smiling at someone. When you notice these actions, link them to faith: ‘That smile was charity,’ or ‘Allah Almighty loves that you helped me today.’ Such language teaches that even small gestures are seen and valued by Allah Almighty.
  • Teach the Habit of Quiet Giving: Encourage your child to do at least one kind act a day without announcing it. It could be tidying something, feeding a pet, or sharing without being told. Afterwards, remind them gently, ‘When you do good secretly, Allah Almighty smiles on your effort.’ This habit nurtures sincerity and builds the inner joy of giving for Allah’s sake alone.
  • Connect Helping Others to Gratitude: Explain that helping others is a way of thanking Allah Almighty for what we have. Say, ‘Because Allah Almighty gave you strong hands, you can help someone who needs them,’ or ‘When you share your toys, you are thanking Allah Almighty for blessing you with them.’
  • Reflect on How Support Strengthens Faith: At the end of the day, talk with your child about how helping others made them feel peaceful or content. Explain that this calmness is a gift from Allah Almighty a small sign that He is pleased. They learn that true reward is not what people say, but what the heart feels when it acts with sincerity.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that service to creation is one of the clearest paths to earning the pleasure of Allah Almighty. The Qur’an and Hadith both connect helping others directly to divine favour.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Insan (76), Verses 8–9:

‘And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [saying], “We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude…”’

This verse teaches that true believers help not for recognition, but for the sake of Allah Almighty’s pleasure. You can explain to your child, ‘When you help without expecting thanks, you are doing what the people Allah Almighty loves do.’ It reminds them that quiet sincerity turns simple actions into acts of worship.

It is recorded in Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 4946, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Allah will aid a servant so long as the servant aids his brother.’

This hadith shows that when we support others, Allah Almighty supports us. You can tell your child, ‘Every time you help someone, Allah Almighty helps you too.’ It transforms helping others into an act of faith that deepens trust in divine mercy. When children build habits of pure intention, gratitude, and quiet generosity, every act of support becomes a step toward earning the pleasure of Allah Almighty.
