Parenting Perspective
Parents often worry that teaching modesty might make their children feel repressed or overly shy. Yet, when we study the life of the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, we see that he embodied haya (modesty) as a form of grace, not fear. His modesty never silenced confidence, nor did it create shame. Instead, it nurtured balance: humility with strength, privacy with dignity, and respect with warmth. Teaching children these prophetic examples helps them understand that modesty enhances character rather than limiting it.
You can begin by saying, ‘The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the most modest of people, but he was also kind, confident, and full of life. His modesty made others feel safe and respected.’ This shows that haya is not about hiding; it is about carrying oneself with self-respect and care for others.
Teaching Through Gentle Speech
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ spoke with such calmness that people felt comfortable even discussing delicate matters with him. His companions said he never used vulgar words and never mocked anyone. When asked private or sensitive questions, he answered clearly but with pure language and a respectful tone.
Parents can model this by choosing refined words when discussing the body, purity, or relationships. You can say, ‘Let us talk about this respectfully, the way the Prophet ﷺ taught us.’ This teaches children that modesty is not silence; it is choosing speech that preserves dignity.
Teaching Confidence Through Calm Behaviour
The Prophet ﷺ showed that modesty does not mean weakness or avoidance. He was courageous, sociable, and approachable, yet always dignified. He never boasted about himself or embarrassed others. Parents can reflect this by encouraging humility in children without making them feel small.
- Instead of saying, ‘Do not speak loudly, it is rude,’ say, ‘Speak calmly, because dignity makes your words stronger.’
- This reframes control as elegance rather than suppression.
- It teaches children that modesty refines confidence, not erases it.
Teaching Modesty in Appearance
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was always clean, well-groomed, and neatly dressed. His modesty included self-care; he encouraged washing, using perfume, and wearing clean clothes for Salah and gatherings. Parents can teach that dressing modestly does not mean neglecting beauty. You can say, ‘The Prophet ﷺ dressed neatly and smelled pleasant because he wanted to appear grateful to Allah Almighty for His blessings.’
This helps children see modesty as a form of honour: not denial of beauty, but expression of gratitude.
Teaching Privacy with Wisdom
The Prophet ﷺ valued privacy but never created an atmosphere of shame. He taught his companions to cover themselves when bathing, to knock before entering rooms, and to lower their gaze out of respect for others. Yet he also answered questions about Ghusl and cleanliness without judgement.
Parents can say, ‘We keep some things private because they are between us and Allah Almighty, but we can always ask questions if we want to learn.’ This reflects prophetic openness paired with moral grace: knowledge without embarrassment.
Teaching Humility in Strength
Even as the Prophet ﷺ led armies and nations, his humility remained profound. He sat on the floor with his companions, mended his own clothes, and ate simply. His modesty came from awareness of Allah Almighty’s greatness, not from self-denial.
Encourage children to practise humility in similar ways: helping others quietly, saying thank you, and admitting mistakes without shame. You can say, ‘Being modest means knowing that every gift we have comes from Allah Almighty.’ This helps them see modesty as empowerment through gratitude.
Teaching Respect Between Genders
The Prophet ﷺ treated women with deep respect and spoke about modesty as mutual. He encouraged men to lower their gaze and women to protect their dignity, reminding both that modesty strengthens community trust.
Parents can explain, ‘The Prophet ﷺ taught that modesty is for everyone; it helps us treat one another with honour.’ This prevents gender imbalance in modesty education and nurtures fairness in faith.
Spiritual Insight
Modesty in Islam is not suppression; it is serenity, a spiritual calm that flows from humility before Allah Almighty. The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ showed that haya is the beauty of faith made visible.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqan (25), Verses 63:
‘And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth humbly, and when the ignorant address them, they say words of peace…’
This verse reveals that true modesty lies in humility of heart and speech. Parents can explain, ‘When you act with calmness and respect, you are walking the way the Prophet ﷺ walked: gently and honourably.’ Children then see that modesty is not withdrawal from the world, but graceful participation in it.
You can describe that when families follow the Prophet’s example, modesty becomes natural: polite words, a peaceful tone, a neat appearance, and thoughtful actions. It creates emotional safety where faith feels beautiful, not heavy.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 9, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Modesty is part of faith, and faith is in Paradise.’
This Hadith captures the essence of balanced modesty; it connects faith with inner peace. Parents who teach modesty through prophetic kindness raise children who are confident, gentle, and spiritually aware. They learn that haya is not hiding from life, but walking through it with light: a light of dignity that shines from knowing they are honoured creations of Allah Almighty.
