Walking down the cooking oil aisle can be a confusing experience for any parent. With countless options, from coconut to canola, and conflicting health claims, it is difficult to know which choice is truly best for the family. Making the right decision, however, is a cornerstone of providing good nutrition. The oils used in daily cooking have a significant impact on a child’s development, energy levels, and long-term health, making this a crucial aspect of mindful parenting.
Understanding Fats and Family Health
For generations, fats were often viewed negatively, but modern nutritional science has shown that the right kinds of fats are essential, especially for growing children. Healthy fats are a primary source of energy, vital for brain development, and necessary for the body to absorb certain vitamins. A parent’s role is to provide these beneficial fats while minimising exposure to unhealthy ones that can contribute to health problems later in life.
The key is to focus on unsaturated fats, found in foods like olives and avocados, which support heart health. By prioritising oils rich in healthy fats, parents are not just cooking a meal; they are actively investing in their children’s physical well-being and establishing a foundation for a long and healthy life.
A Practical Strategy for the Kitchen
A simple, effective strategy for a busy family kitchen involves using two main types of oil based on the cooking method. This ensures that the oils are used in a way that preserves their nutritional benefits and prevents them from becoming unhealthy.
For low-temperature cooking, dressings, and drizzling over finished dishes, a high-quality extra virgin olive oil is an excellent choice. Its rich profile of healthy fats and antioxidants is best preserved when it is not exposed to very high heat.
For high-temperature cooking like roasting, baking, or stir-frying, an oil with a high ‘smoke point’ is required. The smoke point is the temperature at which an oil begins to break down and burn, which can release harmful compounds and create an unpleasant taste. Stable oils with a high smoke point, such as avocado oil, rapeseed oil, or sunflower oil, are ideal for these applications.
Spiritual Insight
While the practical aspects of health are important, for a Muslim, every choice can be elevated to an act of worship through correct intention (niyyah). The selection of something as simple as cooking oil becomes spiritually significant when it is guided by the core Islamic principles of purity (ṭayyib) and seeking blessing (barakah). It transforms a mundane decision into a conscious expression of faith, demonstrating gratitude for Allah’s provisions and a desire to follow the guidance He has sent.
The Divine Standard of Purity
The cornerstone of an Islamic approach to diet is the Quranic concept of consuming that which is ṭayyib. This term encompasses everything that is pure, wholesome, good, and beneficial. It calls on believers to be discerning about the quality of their sustenance.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 172:
‘O you who are believers, consume from amongst that which is purified, which We (Allah Almighty) have provided for you; and be grateful to Allah (Almighty), if you (truly) worship (Allah Almighty) exclusively.’
This verse reminds us that gratitude is shown not only with words but through our actions. When applied to cooking oils, choosing what is ṭayyib means selecting products that are minimally processed, naturally extracted, and free from harmful additives. By consciously choosing the purer option, a parent is fulfilling this Quranic injunction and expressing gratitude for the body, which is a divine trust (amānah). This act acknowledges that Allah has provided us with an abundance of good things, and we honour His gift by choosing the best among them for our families.
The Prophetic Blessing of the Olive
Beyond the general principle of purity, Islam also highlights specific foods that carry a special divine blessing. The olive and its oil hold a place of distinction, having been praised in the Quran and specifically recommended by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
It is recorded in Mishkaat Al Masaabih, Hadith 4221, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Eat olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it comes from a blessed tree.’
This Hadith elevates olive oil from being merely a healthy choice to being a source of barakah. For a believer, using olive oil in the home becomes an act of following the Sunnah. The intention shifts from simply pursuing health benefits to actively seeking the blessings that Allah has placed within this remarkable fruit. It connects our daily family meals to our beloved Prophet ﷺ and infuses a simple culinary ingredient with deep spiritual significance. By making this blessed oil a staple in our kitchens, we are not only nourishing our families’ bodies but also nurturing their souls.
