Parenting Perspective
Puberty can represent a confusing period for children as their emotions fluctuate, their bodies alter, and their sense of identity begins to crystallise. During this phase, children require reassurance that Allah Almighty’s guidance remains constant. Teaching them simple, heartfelt duas establishes a private channel between them and their Creator. These supplications remind them that Allah Almighty listens even when words fail, understands feelings they cannot articulate, and His love endures through every stage of their development.
You can begin by saying, ‘Whenever you feel confused or emotional, speak to Allah Almighty. He is the One who initiated this change and He will assist you through it.’ This provides children with a spiritual anchor, transforming confusion into closeness and anxiety into calm.
Teaching Dua as Emotional Safety
Children often conceal their emotions due to fear of being misunderstood. Parents can gently explain, ‘You can confide everything in Allah Almighty, even things you cannot share with me. He always listens with mercy.’
This approach helps them perceive dua not merely as a ritual but as a secure space, a form of emotional hygiene where they can release worries and regain peace. It also cultivates the habit of turning to faith for comfort, rather than suppressing emotions.
Simple Duas for Emotional Calmness
You can teach your child brief, easily remembered duas that soothe the heart during moments of sadness, stress, or confusion. Encouraging regular connection through these duas, perhaps after Salah or before sleep, helps children turn emotions into remembrance.
- Dua for Calmness It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6369, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught the following supplication:
‘Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal hammi wal hazani…’ ‘O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and sadness…’ This dua assists children in managing overwhelming emotions and finding mental peace.
- Dua for Guidance and Strength It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2721, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say:
‘Allahumma inni as’aluka al huda, wat tuqa, wal ‘afafa, wal ghina…’ ‘O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment…’ This supplication strengthens faith and purity, ideal for children learning self control during puberty.
- Dua for Trust in Allah Almighty Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah At Tawbah (9), Verses 129:
‘…Hasbiyallahu la ilaha illa Huwa, ‘alayhi tawakkaltu, wa Huwa Rabbul ‘Arshil ‘Azim…’ ‘…Allah is sufficient for me; there is no deity except Him. In Him I place my trust, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne…’ Reciting this verse helps children practise Tawakkul, trusting Allah Almighty during confusing changes.
- Dua for Gratitude and Self Acceptance A simple expression of thanks can foster acceptance:
‘Alhamdulillah alladhi ahsana khalqi wa sawwarani fi ahsani soorah…’ ‘All praise is for Allah, who has made my form good and fashioned me in the best shape…’ This dua helps children embrace their growing bodies with gratitude and dignity instead of embarrassment.
Modelling the Habit of Dua
Parents can effectively model the practice of dua by making it visible in daily life, reciting aloud before decisions or during stressful moments. When children observe parents turning naturally to Allah Almighty, dua becomes an integrated family language of peace and trust. You might say, ‘Let us both make dua that Allah Almighty keeps our hearts pure and strong.’ Shared prayer builds a sense of belonging and demonstrates that spiritual calm is not only attainable but beautiful.
Spiritual Insight
Puberty marks a time of awakening: physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Islam provides duas not just as words but as a bridge to Allah Almighty’s mercy. Through these prayers, children learn that every emotion can be placed safely within His care.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 186:
‘And when My servants ask you concerning Me — indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me…’
This verse reassures children that Allah Almighty is always near, regardless of how confused or shy they feel. Parents can explain, ‘Even if you cannot articulate everything, Allah Almighty already knows what resides in your heart and still desires you to call upon Him.’
You can describe that this closeness transforms fear into faith. It reminds children that Allah Almighty’s guidance is constant, even when life feels unfamiliar.
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 3371, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Dua is the essence of worship.’
This Hadith teaches that making dua itself strengthens faith. When children learn to channel their emotions into conversation with Allah Almighty, they develop a confidence that is humble, hopeful, and rooted in trust. Every whisper becomes worship, and every moment of confusion presents an opportunity for spiritual growth.
Through these duas, children discover that Allah Almighty is not distant; He is their closest source of calm, clarity, and guidance throughout every stage of growing up.
