Parenting Perspective
The decision to begin medication can be daunting for any teenager. Many young people struggle with the idea that taking a pill means they are weak. To address these fears, parents can use a dialogue that focuses on the biological reality of the brain. You can explain that the brain is an organ just like the heart and sometimes it needs support. This shift helps the teenager see medication as a practical resource. It is important to avoid dramatic language and use a calm tone.
Explaining the Purpose of Support
A parent can start by saying: ‘I want you to know that taking this medication is not a sign that you are broken. It is simply a tool that helps balance the chemistry in your brain so you can feel like yourself again.’ This script is effective because it removes the stigma of insanity. It frames the treatment to clear the fog so they can engage with the world. Parents should remind their child that many people use tools to succeed, like glasses for sight.
Empowering the Teenager
Another script focuses on the supportive nature of the treatment: ‘We are using this to give you breathing room while you learn other ways to manage your feelings. It does not define who you are.’ By emphasising that medication is a choice made to improve life, the teen feels in control. Parents should encourage their children to be honest about how it makes them feel. This ensures the teenager is an active participant in their own health and recovery.
Spiritual Insight
Beyond strategies, there lies the deeper nourishment that faith offers. noble Quran and Sunnah (Prophetic Way) remind us that raising children is about nurturing hearts that remember Allah Almighty.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Nahal (16), Verse 69:
‘There comes forth from their bellies a drink of varying colours wherein is healing for mankind.’
This reminds us that Allah Almighty has placed healing in the natural world. Taking medication is utilising provisions Allah Almighty has created for our benefit. It is a sign of wisdom to seek a cure and trust the Creator.
It is recorded in Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 3855, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Make use of medical treatment, for Allah Almighty has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it.’
This teaches us that seeking medical help is encouraged in our faith and is not a sign of weak Imaan (Faith). It is a practical step toward health. A teenager can feel confident following the example of holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Relying on Allah Almighty while using tools is the essence of Tawakkal (Trust). Parents can reassure their children that their identity is safe and strength is seen in willingness to heal. With patience, the teenager will understand that medication is a mercy. Every step taken toward health is fulfilling a purpose. The family stays united in faith. Seeking help is a brave choice. Peace and health are gifts from the Creator to be cherished. Always seek the best path. Allah Almighty is the Healer of all things. We trust in His mercy always. Success is near. We pray for guidance and strength in every difficult moment.
