What changes can I make in my own behaviour so my child sees me modelling patience in daily life?

Parenting Perspective

Children learn far more from what we do than from what we say. If you want your child to develop the virtue of patience, it is essential that they regularly see it reflected in your own actions, tone, and daily decisions.

Slow Down Your Responses

Rather than reacting instantly when something goes wrong or a request is made, make a conscious effort to pause. Taking a single, deep breath before you respond calmly shows your child that not every situation requires an immediate, rushed reaction.

Demonstrate Willingness to Wait

Let your child see you waiting for your turn in a queue without complaining, or deliberately finishing one task completely before you start another. These small, everyday examples of patience become powerful, silent lessons for them.

Avoid Multitasking During Connection

When you are speaking with your child, try to set aside your phone or other work and give them your full, undivided attention. This teaches them a crucial aspect of patience: prioritising what truly matters in the present moment.

By making these small but consistent changes in your own habits, you not only model patience but also create a calmer home environment where your child feels encouraged to practise it themselves.

Spiritual Insight

From an Islamic perspective, exercising patience in our daily lives is a continuous act of worship. When practised openly in front of our families, it becomes a silent and powerful form of teaching.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Zumar (39), Verse 10:

‘…Indeed, those people that were resilient shall be rewarded with what is their due, without any limitations.’

This reminds us that every moment of patience we exhibit holds an immense and immeasurable reward from Allah Almighty.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6470, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Whoever tries to be patient, Allah will give him patience. And no one is ever given a gift better and more encompassing than patience.’

This beautiful hadith teaches us that patience is a divine gift that we can actively nurture and develop through our own conscious effort and intention.

When your child regularly witnesses you practising patience, they are learning much more than a life skill; they are seeing a beautiful act of faith in action.
