Parenting Perspective
Many young girls, when they first learn the rulings around menstruation, feel anxious about remembering what to do and what to pause. They worry they might pray or fast when they should not, or forget to make up missed fasts later. This fear usually comes from sincerity your daughter wants to please Allah Almighty but feels unsure about the details. Your role as a parent is to replace her anxiety with calm understanding, showing that Allah Almighty values intention and effort more than flawless memory.
Begin with Reassurance and Compassion
Tell her that her concern itself is a clear sign of faith (Iman). You can say, “The fact that you want to follow Allah Almighty’s rules correctly means your heart is already in the right place, and that’s what matters most.” This helps her see that worry does not mean failure; it means she cares deeply.
Simplify and Clarify the Basics
Avoid overwhelming her with complex rulings. Focus solely on what she truly needs to know first:
- During menstruation, she pauses prayer (Salah) and fasting.
- She resumes both immediately after performing ghusl (the full ritual bath).
- She does not need to make up the missed prayers.
- She must make up the missed fasts later.
You can write a simple, discreet checklist together that she can keep privately as an easy reference.
Teach the Spirit Behind the Rulings
Remind her that these rules come from Allah Almighty’s mercy, not from strictness. You might say, “Allah Almighty understands that your body needs rest during this time. He gives you this pause because He cares for you. It is His mercy, not a test.” When she sees compassion in the divine law, obedience becomes much easier and more loving.
Model Calmness About Mistakes
If she forgets or becomes unsure, respond with immediate calmness: “Allah Almighty forgives honest mistakes and forgetfulness. What matters is that you tried your best and that you ask questions when you are confused.” Reassure her that seeking knowledge is also an act of worship.
Keep the Atmosphere of Learning Open
Be her primary, trusted source of guidance. If she feels shy, remind her that discussing these matters is natural and a necessary part of growing up as a Muslimah. Say, “Every woman has to learn this even the most knowledgeable scholars once asked these same questions.” This normalises the conversation and strengthens the trust between you.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, Allah Almighty values sincerity and remembrance far more than perfection. The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that when believers act out of care and awareness, even their honest mistakes are forgiven. For a girl entering womanhood, learning about menstruation is not just about rules it is about understanding Allah Almighty’s profound compassion in every stage of her body and life.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 286:
‘Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear; it will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned…’
This verse reassures young girls that Allah Almighty never expects them to remember or perform beyond their capacity. Parents can explain, “If you forget something by honest mistake, Allah Almighty will not hold it against you. He knows your intention, and He values your effort above all.” This helps transform fear into confidence grounded in Divine trust.
The promise of forgiveness:
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah , Hadith 2045, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Allah has forgiven my nation for mistakes, forgetfulness, and what they are forced to do.’
This Hadith directly comforts anyone afraid of forgetting. You can tell your daughter, “Even if you forget one rule or make a small mistake, Allah Almighty already promised forgiveness. What truly matters is that you keep sincerely trying to learn and obey.”
When parents approach this topic gently, a daughter’s fear fades into faith. She learns that remembering Allah Almighty is more important than remembering every intricate detail. Gradually, she will see that Islam is not about catching errors but about guiding hearts. Through reassurance, clarity, and love, you help her realise that Allah Almighty’s rules were never meant to make her anxiousthey were mean t to help her live in harmony with the mercy and rhythm He built into her life.
