What can I say when my child asks why some people have more and others have less?

Parenting Perspective

Children are naturally puzzled by inequality. They keenly notice differences among friends and may ask directly why Allah Almighty gives some people more or less. This profound question, if handled with wisdom and sensitivity, can nurture empathy, deep gratitude, and sincere trust in divine wisdom.

Start by affirming the question itself. Say, ‘That is a very good question, and it shows you are a thoughtful and kind person.’ This validates their curiosity without judgement. Then, explain that Allah Almighty gives different kinds of blessings to different people, some receive wealth, others are given health, deep knowledge, or inner peace. Crucially, explain that each gift, whether tangible or intangible, is a test of how we use it.

Purpose, Not Equality, and Service

Discuss fairness from the perspective of purpose rather than simple equality. Say, ‘Allah does not love the rich more than the poor, or the poor more than the rich. He watches what each person does with the blessings they have received.’ This powerful concept teaches both accountability for their own blessings and humility towards others.

Encourage active acts of giving. Involve your child in helping someone less fortunate, even in small, practical ways. When they genuinely experience the internal joy of giving, compassion naturally and actively replaces destructive comparison. Remind them that sharing does not actually reduce what one has; it multiplies contentment and barakah

When they express confusion or sadness about poverty or hardship, acknowledge the feeling: ‘It is very okay to feel that way. That sadness is a sign of mercy and goodness in your heart.’ Use such strong emotions as seeds for growing deep empathy and a commitment to service.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that provision (Rizq) is distributed by a higher, divine wisdom. Differences in wealth are purposeful, designed to create necessary balance, profound compassion, and opportunity for mutual service.

Interdependence and Humility

This verse powerfully reveals that financial inequality is purposeful. Allah Almighty has “apportioned among them their livelihood” and has “raised some of them above others in degrees” specifically “that they may make use of one another for service.” This system fosters interdependence within society, ensuring that the wealthy rely on the services of the less wealthy, and vice versa. It simultaneously instils humility in those who receive more, reminding them that their position is a test and a tool for service, not a source of arrogance. The verse concludes by stating that “the mercy of your Lord is better than whatever they accumulate,” firmly placing spiritual reward above material gain.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Az Zukhruf (43), Verses 32:

‘We have apportioned among them their livelihood in the life of this world and have raised some of them above others in degrees, that they may make use of one another for service. But the mercy of your Lord is better than whatever they accumulate…’

Directing the Heart to Gratitude

This Prophetic wisdom offers a direct and practical method for guiding the heart away from potentially destructive jealousy and comparison and towards a deep, appreciation-based gratitude for one’s own secure state. The instruction to ‘Look at those who are lower than you’ is the best way to prevent the spiritual disease of ‘belittling the favours of Allah upon you’ that is, taking one’s own immense blessings for granted. It acts as an active spiritual shield against the relentless pressure of upward comparison.

It is recorded in Bulugh Al-Maram, Hadith 2, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Look at those who are lower than you and do not look at those who are above you, for it is the best way not to belittle the favours of Allah upon you…’

When your child learns that Allah Almighty’s distribution is neither random nor unjust, they begin to view these differences as profound opportunities to practise kindness, trust, and service. Their heart matures with faith; they become genuinely grateful for what they possess and are truly compassionate toward those with less. This perspective moves them beyond self-focus, nurturing a strong character that values interdependence and sees the beauty of divine order in every aspect of life.
