It is a difficult but entirely inevitable question in the modern world: why do those who act dishonestly or engage in corruption often seem to prosper and amass wealth in this life? Your answer must draw a clear and absolute distinction between outward appearance and true, enduring reality. Begin by validating your child’s perceptive observation, then explain that the wealth and status gained through corruption are fundamentally a test and a deception (fitnah), not a genuine or sustainable form of success. 

Teach your child that the true, eternal measure of success is internal and moral, not external and material. A person may possess vast wealth, but if it was acquired unjustly, that money acts as a poison, corrupting their soul, damaging their most vital relationships, and stripping their life of peace. That apparent success is tragically hollow, often accompanied by deep anxiety, crippling guilt, and the constant fear of discovery and severe consequences. 

The True Cost of Corruption 

Help your child see beyond the surface glamour and understand the profound cost of the corrupt person’s actions.Consequences in this Life: While they may not face immediate public punishment, corrupt individuals often suffer from deep spiritual and psychological distress. Their relationships are strained by mistrust, and their hearts tragically lack the sukun (tranquillity) that comes only from honest, blessed work. This inner turmoil is their true, hidden poverty.The Nature of the Test (Istidraj): Explain that Allah Almighty, in His vast wisdom, grants provision to both the righteous and the unrighteous. For the corrupt, this worldly success is often an istidraj—a gradual, deceptive leading towards destruction. Allah gives them time and provision (al-muhlah), but their apparent prosperity is a temporary delusion designed to test the faith and patience of the believers and to complete the evidence against the disbelievers on the Day of Judgement. 

Encourage your child to remain steadfast and focus solely on their own ethical path. Their true worth is tied to how they live with integrity, sincerity, and unwavering faith, regardless of the worldly status of others. True, meaningful success is found in the clarity of conscience and the deep, abiding knowledge that one has fulfilled their duty to Allah Almighty. 

Spiritual Insight 

The Islamic perspective provides the most profound and decisive answer to the question of apparent worldly success for the unrighteous. It firmly establishes that all wealth and status in this fleeting life are temporary, and the only true measure of success is what is attained in the eternal Hereafter. This understanding acts as the spiritual anchor, completely neutralising the temptation to compare one’s ethical life with the unethical success of others. 

The Quran issues a powerful and absolute reminder that all of life’s temporary achievements are merely an illusion when measured against the ultimate reality of the Day of Judgment. 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Imran (3), Verse 185: 

‘Every soul will taste death. And you will only be given your full reward on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is removed from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has certainly triumphed. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion…’ 

This verse is the decisive, final answer. It clarifies that ultimate triumph is defined solely and exclusively by being saved from the Fire and admitted to Paradise. The worldly life—with all its ephemeral wealth, status, and apparent successes—is comprehensively dismissed as mata al-ghurur (the enjoyment of delusion). This profound perspective teaches a child that the rich corrupt person is only ‘successful’ for a few fleeting, uncertain years, but they are headed towards an inevitable and eternal reckoning. In sharp contrast, the honest person who struggled with integrity is assured of a lasting, infinite reward. 

The importance of aligning our worldly actions with our faith is further emphasised by the Prophet Muhammadﷺ. Wealth, when separated from righteousness and proper usage, quickly becomes a burden, not a blessing. 

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2416, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺsaid: 

‘The son of Adam will not be dismissed from his Lord on the Day of Resurrection until he is questioned about five issues: about his life and how he spent it, about his youth and how he used it, about his wealth and how he acquired it, and where he spent it, and about what he did with his knowledge.’ 

This hadith highlights that outward success is hollow without righteousness because a severe spiritual reckoning awaits. The seemingly successful corrupt person will face an exhaustive interrogation about the source and expenditure of their wealth—the very aspects they compromised. This teaching confirms that true success is earned not by having much, but by having righteous and clean accounts for that which one possessed, making the moral choice always the wisest and most successful choice for eternity.
