What can I say if my child finds these topics “gross” or refuses to talk about them?

Parenting Perspective

It is an entirely natural reaction for some children to respond to discussions about body changes or puberty with immediate laughter, visible embarrassment, or even outright disgust. Their discomfort is never intended as personal rejection; it is often a visible sign of their immaturity meeting a new awareness. They feel momentarily suspended between their safe childhood and the onset of adulthood, unsure of how best to react to the new information. As a composed parent, your crucial role is to remain calm, highly patient, and consistently respectful. Your primary aim is not to force an immediate, uncomfortable conversation, but to intentionally create a secure space where that essential dialogue can safely and naturally unfold when the timing is right for them.

The key to navigating this moment is not to push for answers, but to gently plant the seeds of trust. Even if your child actively avoids the topic now, your gentle tone and respectful attitude will reliably ensure that when their curiosity eventually returns, they will instinctively come to you first.

Normalising the Reaction

If your child immediately says, “That is gross!” or attempts to rapidly change the subject, you must consciously avoid showing irritation or disappointment. Smile softly and respond gently: “I completely understand that it feels a bit awkward to talk about these things right now it used to feel that way for me, too. But please know that these physical changes happen to absolutely everyone, and they are completely and perfectly normal.”

  • Disarming Defensiveness: By immediately acknowledging their feelings and validating their discomfort, you effectively disarm their defensiveness. You are clearly showing them that their emotional discomfort is natural, temporary, and never permanent.

Keep the Tone Light and Warm

The appropriate use of humour, when delivered gently and lovingly, can significantly ease the tension in the room. For instance, you might offer: “I promise I am not here to embarrass you at all. I just sincerely want to help you understand these natural things before they unexpectedly surprise you!”

A well placed touch of warmth and gentle laughter successfully turns the sensitive topic from something they perceive as “gross” into something that is human, relatable, and manageable

Give Them Time and Control

You must never corner or pressure your child into listening or answering questions immediately. Instead, state clearly: “That is entirely okay; we do not have to talk about all of this right now. Please know that when you are ready or genuinely curious, I will be right here and available to listen.”

By consciously giving them control over the timing, you effectively remove the external pressure. They will vividly remember your calm, patient approach and will reliably return to you on their own terms.

Provide Resources They Can Explore Privately

Sometimes, children require private space to fully process sensitive information before they feel comfortable enough to ask open questions. Thoughtfully offer faith appropriate books or specific educational videos about the process of growing up. Say clearly: “I have found a useful resource that explains things clearly and respectfully. You can privately look at it whenever you feel ready and comfortable.”

This act of providing resources empowers them to learn autonomously without feeling forced into a confrontation while still securely keeping you as their ultimate, reliable guide.

Reinforce That Curiosity Is Courageous

When they eventually choose to engage, no matter how hesitantly or briefly, you must affirm their effort: “I truly appreciate that you asked that question I know these sensitive things can feel strange to discuss, but learning about them is a key part of confidently growing up.”

This approach intentionally transforms what felt like awkwardness into pride, teaching them that sincerely seeking truth is always braver and more mature than choosing to avoid it.

Gently remind your child that learning about their physical body is not “gross” it is, in fact, an act of gratitude and reverence. You can say, “Your body is one of Allah’s most amazing and complex creations. Every biological system functions perfectly by His Divine command that is something to deeply admire, never to avoid.”

When they actively begin to view their physical body as a miracle instead of an embarrassing mystery, their initial disgust naturally gives way to profound appreciation and respect.

Model Calm Consistency

Even if your child continues to actively withdraw from the topic, you must never stop consistently modelling openness and respect. Mention relevant topics briefly and with clear respect, but avoid making them the central focus of your conversations. Over time, your quiet steadiness teaches them that these necessary conversations are a normal, expected part of life, never a shocking event.

You might simply state, “When you are older, you will come to understand this much better, but please always remember it is nothing to feel strange or awkward about.”

Your calm consistency will silently build the necessary foundation for all future dialogue.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, the spiritual act of learning about the body is never considered shameful it is a form of ilm (knowledge) and amanah (responsibility). The noble Quran and the teachings of the holy Prophet Muhammad  consistently remind all believers to seek essential knowledge patiently, calmly, and always with sincerity.

Patience in Teaching and Learning

The Quran teaches that the growth of understanding is a gradual process that requires consistent humility and effort.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ta Ha (20), Verse 114:

‘And say, ‘My Lord, increase me in knowledge…’’

This verse beautifully shows that significant growth in understanding happens gradually and only with sincere humility. Sharing this verse with your child reinforces the truth that learning even sensitive truths about the body is a respected act of worship, performed at their own pace, under the gentle guidance of Allah.

The Prophet ’s Gentle Manner in Guiding Youth

The Hadith strongly supports the principle that gentleness and ease are the most effective spiritual tools for teaching.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

Make things easy and do not make them difficult, give glad tidings and do not make people turn away.’

This profound Hadith beautifully supports the core message of necessary patience and gentleness when dealing with emotional discomfort. It reminds parents that consistent ease and sincere encouragement open hearts far more effectively than intense pressure or coercion ever could. By thoughtfully approaching sensitive conversations with calm warmth, you faithfully reflect the Prophetic method guiding through compassion, never through force.

Guiding Without Pushing

When you deliberately respond to their discomfort with patience instead of frustration, you teach your child the profound truth that embarrassment is never a sin it is merely a natural, temporary stage of growth. Through your steady, loving reassurance, they gradually learn that faith, modesty, and knowledge can coexist without fear.

Even if they continue to resist your efforts now, your unwavering warmth and composed presence will remain securely embedded in their heart. One day, when significant confusion or doubt arises, they will vividly remember that the family home was the only place where all questions were truly safe

And in that pivotal future moment when they finally choose to turn to you your patient, consistent love will have successfully achieved what force never could: it will have faithfully nurtured trust, sincerely strengthened their faith, and taught them that Allah’s perfect design, in all its natural beauty, is something to approach and understand with profound gratitude, never something to be awkwardly avoided in personal shame.
