What can I do when relatives frame delays as divine punishment?

Hearing relatives describe a child’s slower milestones as punishment can wound both the parent and the child deeply. Such comments may plant seeds of shame, making the child feel that they are somehow guilty for their pace of growth. As a parent, your role is to create a protective buffer that filters these words, offering your child dignity and reassurance instead of fear.

Parenting Perspective

Respond with Calm Firmness

It can be tempting to argue sharply when relatives make such remarks, but children observe how you handle these moments. A composed reply sends a stronger message than anger. You might say, ‘Every child grows in the way Allah Almighty has written for them. It is not a punishment but part of their story.’ This reframes the conversation without escalating tension.

Shield Your Child from Absorbing Harmful Labels

If such comments are made in front of your child, address them privately afterwards. Say, ‘Some people do not understand growth the way Allah Almighty has designed it. Your journey is not a punishment, it is your unique path.’ This ensures your child does not internalise the hurtful words, even if relatives continue to speak them.

Create a Counter-Narrative at Home

The words children hear most often become the strongest in their hearts. Make your home a space where delays are described as part of natural diversity, not deficiency. Use affirming metaphors: ‘Flowers bloom in different seasons, yet each is beautiful.’ When your child hears this regularly, the narrative of punishment loses its power.

Educate Relatives Gently

Not every relative intends harm. Some may speak from cultural misconceptions rather than malice. When possible, share knowledge that reframes delays. You might say, ‘Medical experts explain that children grow at different paces. Islam also teaches that every soul is a trust from Allah Almighty, not a punishment.’ Offering information calmly can open space for understanding.

Decide on Boundaries

If certain relatives consistently harm your child’s confidence, you may need to limit their exposure. Protecting your child’s emotional health is a priority, and setting boundaries is a form of care. You can still remain respectful while choosing not to place your child in situations where damaging comments are repeated.

Strengthen Your Child’s Inner Shield

Even with careful protection, children may still hear hurtful things. Equip them with words they can hold onto, such as, ‘Allah Almighty made me in His wisdom, and my pace is not a mistake.’ When children learn to answer harmful thoughts with affirming truths, they carry resilience that relatives cannot take away.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that trials, delays, and differences are not punishments by default, but opportunities for growth, patience, and closeness to Allah Almighty. Linking your child’s journey to this spiritual wisdom can dissolve the narrative of blame and replace it with dignity.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ankabut (29), Verses 2:

‘Do the people think that they will be left to say, “We believe” and they will not be tested?..’

This verse reminds us that tests are part of every believer’s life, not a mark of rejection or punishment. You can explain to your child, ‘Having a different pace is one kind of test, and Allah Almighty honours you when you face it with patience.’

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4031, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘The greatest reward comes with the greatest trial. When Allah loves a people, He tests them, and whoever is content will have His pleasure, but whoever is discontent will earn His wrath.’

This Hadith shows that tests are often signs of divine love, not punishment. When framed this way, delays become a sign of Allah Almighty’s care, inviting your child to grow in patience and strength.

By calmly challenging harmful remarks, creating affirming language at home, and grounding your child in the Quran and Sunnah, you protect them from shame and despair. Over time, they will come to see that their pace is not a punishment, but a unique trust from Allah Almighty, designed for their path of growth.
