What Can I Do When My Child Thinks Illegal Shortcuts Are the Fastest Path to Success?

It is a common temptation for children, observing the seemingly rapid gains of others, to believe that illegal or unethical shortcuts are the quickest route to success. As a parent, your primary task is to teach them that there is a profound distinction between speed and sustainability. While shortcuts may offer immediate results, they build a life on an unstable foundation, inevitably leading to instability, fear, and spiritual deficit. 

Begin by introducing the concept of Barakah, or divine blessing. Explain that barakah is the unseen power that makes small, honestly earned wealth feel abundant and large, unblessed wealth feel empty and insufficient. Illegal shortcuts may bring monetary gain, but they strip the wealth of any barakah, leaving the person feeling constantly anxious and unsatisfied. True, lasting prosperity is measured not by quantity, but by the peace and stability it brings. 

The Illusion of Quick Wealth 

Help your child develop a critical eye by dissecting the perceived ease of these shortcuts. Point out that every illegal shortcut carries an immense hidden cost: the loss of integrity, the fear of exposure, and the moral corruption of one’s character. For instance, share narratives of successful people who took the long, difficult road, emphasising that their eventual success was secure because it was founded on hard work, reputation, and respect. 

Conversely, use simple, relatable examples to show how a shortcut is often a trap. If someone cheats on a test, they gain a good mark but miss the crucial knowledge they need for the next level, causing them to fail later. This demonstrates that true competence cannot be cheated, and any success not earned through genuine effort is hollow and transient. 

Cultivating Diligence and Patience 

The best counter to the desire for shortcuts is to model and reward diligence and patience. Encourage your child to set realistic, ethical goals and to celebrate the effort involved in achieving them, not just the final outcome. Use beautiful formatting to highlight key action points:Focus on small, honest steps that build skills systematically.Praise perseverance through difficulty, demonstrating that struggle builds character.Teach that success earned through toil provides lasting satisfaction and self-respect.By reinforcing the spiritual and emotional rewards of doing things the right way, you inoculate your child against the dangerous, tempting lie that an illegal shortcut is ever worth the price. 

Spiritual Insight 

The Islamic worldview unequivocally rejects all forms of unlawful or unethical gain, framing the righteous path as the only route to both worldly contentment and eternal success. The faith assures us that the path of integrity is never too difficult if we rely on Allah and put forth our best, honest effort. 

The Quran provides a powerful reassurance that the divine system is always geared towards what is just and manageable for the believer, even when the honest path seems arduous. 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286: 

‘Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear…’ 

This verse offers immense comfort and strength. It assures children that the expectations of honest effort and ethical conduct are within their capacity. It encourages them to approach the challenges of honest earning with sincerity (ikhlas) and faith, knowing that the difficulties are a measure of their character, not a sign that they should seek illicit shortcuts. The honest path is inherently blessed and supported by Allah. 

Furthermore, the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ elevate the honest pursuit of knowledge and livelihood to a high form of worship, directly linking effort with eternal reward. 

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2646, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:  

‘Whoever travels a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise.’ 

This hadith provides the ultimate spiritual incentive for diligence and ethical conduct. By seeking knowledge or earning a livelihood through legitimate means, a person is, in effect, paving their way to Paradise. This transforms the concept of “the long road” into the most rewarding path. It teaches the child that the slow, steady progress achieved through honesty and sincere effort is the true form of ultimate success, one that is recognised and blessed by the Creator, guaranteeing both stability in this life and success in the next.
