Parenting Perspective 

It is a core parenting principle that ethical, eco-friendly living should never be allowed to become a restrictive financial burden that causes hardship or guilt. When affordability becomes a challenge, parents must firmly teach their children the profound Islamic truth that intention (Niyyah) matters most. This crucial reframing shifts the entire effort from a consumerist burden to a practical and profound spiritual discipline. 

Resourcefulness Over Expenditure 

Parents should explain to their child that true sustainable living in Islam is rooted in gratitude and moderation (Iqtisad), not in the acquisition of expensive, specialised products. Show them clearly that the most authentic and effective eco-actions are often the most affordable and spiritually rewarding. This involves emphasising the dignity of reusing items, creatively repairing what is broken, and actively sharing resources with others. State clearly: ‘We are focusing on saving Allah’s blessings by reducing waste, not merely chasing the latest eco-trends that can become costly.’ 

The Beauty of Simplicity 

Parents must make creativity their family’s ally against financial constraint. Find practical, affordable ways to live mindfully and resourcefully, such as repurposing household jars and containers for storage. Be vigilant about cooking from leftovers to ensure nothing is wasted, and prioritise buying local, seasonal produce which is typically less expensive than exotic, imported goods. When children observe that simplicity is not a sacrifice but a beautiful and ethical choice, they naturally connect environmental consciousness with humility and genuine resourcefulness—values that are deeply respected and rooted in Islamic living. This powerful lesson teaches them to manage resources wisely, irrespective of their financial means. 

Spiritual Insight 

The Islamic spiritual tradition provides comprehensive guidance on expenditure, consumption, and resource management, defining righteousness through balance (Mizan) and demonstrating that financial prudence is a definitive hallmark of intelligent faith. 

Guidance from the Noble Quran 

The Divine text explicitly sets the standard for responsible financial conduct, emphasising balance and the avoidance of all extremes. 

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqan (25), Verse 67: 

‘And those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly, but are ever, between that, justly moderate…’ 

This eloquent ayah explicitly highlights that balance—the precise avoidance of both extravagance (Israf) and miserliness (Bukhl)—is the very essence of righteousness (Istiqamah). It confirms that a life lived in a state of just moderation (qawama) is a defining characteristic of the ‘servants of the Most Merciful.’ This is a crucial teaching for children, as it shows them that even small, affordable acts of mindfulness and frugality align perfectly with divine wisdom. It powerfully removes the pressure of feeling obligated to buy expensive ethical products and places the entire focus back on internal intention and balanced, responsible behaviour. 

The prophetic teachings offer profound assurance that contentment and sufficiency are the ultimate forms of success, independent of material excess. 

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1054, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 

‘He has certainly succeeded who has accepted Islam and been provided with sufficiency and been made contented by Allah with what He has given him.’ 

This profound hadith offers immense reassurance to families navigating financial pressures. It elevates the attainment of sufficiency and contentment (Qana’ah) above material wealth, directly linking true success (falah) to one’s faith and spiritual state. By teaching this, parents show children that living sustainably within one’s means is not a painful compromise; rather, it is an act of honouring Allah’s guidance. This spiritual perspective helps children find deep, internal satisfaction in simple, resource-saving activities like reusing and repairing, thereby validating their ethical choices as a high degree of practical intelligence and an authentic expression of faith.
