What are ways to help children view bodily changes as signs of Allah’s wisdom, not embarrassment?

Parenting Perspective

When children begin to notice differences in their bodies new hair, height, voice, or emotions they often feel unsure of what these changes mean. Some respond with curiosity, while others feel shy or confused. Parents play a crucial role in shaping whether these changes are met with embarrassment or with understanding and gratitude. The most powerful way to help is to speak calmly, with warmth and faith, showing that every transformation is part of Allah Almighty’s perfect plan.

Children learn from the emotional tone around them. If parents speak with awkwardness or avoidance, the child senses that something about their body is uncomfortable to discuss. But if parents show confidence and respect, they teach that the body’s changes are natural, purposeful, and worthy of care. A parent can say, ‘Allah Almighty made every person’s body grow in its own time. These changes are part of His wisdom to help you become stronger and wiser.’ Such reassurance replaces embarrassment with trust in Allah Almighty’s design.

Use Faith to Explain Purpose

Parents can connect biology to spirituality by explaining that growth is one of Allah Almighty’s ways of preparing a person for maturity and responsibility. A mother might tell her daughter, ‘These changes mean Allah Almighty is helping you get ready for new stages of life,’ while a father might say to his son, ‘Your strength and growth show that Allah Almighty trusts you to use them for good.’

When children understand why these changes happen, their confusion turns to meaning. Puberty no longer feels like a strange accident but like a divine signal that they are moving into a new phase of capability and trust.

Replace Silence with Small, Natural Talks

Children are more comfortable when the topic of bodily change is introduced gradually and naturally. Instead of waiting for questions or dramatic shifts, parents can bring up the subject in everyday moments. A short comment like, ‘When you grow, your body will start to show new signs of strength,’ or, ‘Everyone experiences change as they get older, and that is how Allah Almighty designed us,’ keeps the tone normal.

Several short, calm talks are more effective than one big, serious lecture. Frequent, light reminders show that the topic is safe, normal, and rooted in faith. To implement this approach, parents can use the following methods:

  • Address any new physical sign, such as a growth spurt or voice change, by simply stating, ‘This is a sign of growth’ and attributing it to Allah Almighty’s will.
  • Share brief, age-appropriate facts about human development during times of shared quiet, such as driving in the car or preparing a meal, rather than having a formal meeting.
  • Respond to any sign of shyness not with alarm, but with a gentle, reassuring statement that their body is a gift from Allah Almighty and is protected by Him.

Teach Cleanliness as Dignity, Not Obligation

Puberty comes with new physical realities sweat, hair growth, and hormonal changes that can cause embarrassment. Parents can guide children to see cleanliness as honourable, not burdensome. By saying, ‘When you stay clean, you are honouring the trust Allah Almighty gave you,’ parents teach that hygiene is an act of worship and self-respect.

When these habits are taught through encouragement instead of criticism, children see them as ways to express gratitude for their body, not as punishments for growing up.

Model Gratitude and Respect for the Body

Children notice how parents talk about their own bodies. If parents speak with respect, avoid mocking appearance, and show gratitude for health, children mirror that attitude. Parents can share small reflections like, ‘Alhamdulillah, Allah Almighty made our bodies work in amazing ways,’ helping children see growth as a reason to praise, not hide.

Even a few calm words of gratitude can turn awkward moments into teaching ones moments that quietly remind the child that change is part of mercy.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that every part of creation is designed with purpose. Puberty, like every stage of life, is a chapter written by Allah Almighty in perfect proportion. Each bodily change reflects His wisdom, balance, and care.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Mu’minun (23), Verse 14:

‘Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump, and We made the lump bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators…’

This verse reminds us that every phase of human development is deliberate, from the unseen to the visible. After sharing this verse, parents can say, ‘Allah Almighty has been guiding your growth since before you were born. Every change you see now is part of that same care. Nothing about your body is random it is shaped by His wisdom.’ This reflection transforms awkwardness into gratitude and awe

It is recorded in Riyadh Al Saliheen, Hadith 611, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Indeed, Allah is beautiful and loves beauty.’

Through this hadith, children learn that beauty is not about perfection but about harmony with Allah Almighty’s creation. When they care for their body, stay clean, and act with humility, they are living in alignment with that beauty.

By combining warmth, faith, and respect, parents teach their children that bodily change is not something to hide, but something to thank Allah Almighty for. It becomes a reminder that growth both physical and spiritual is one of the clearest signs of His mercy and wisdom.
