Parenting Perspective
Managing mornings with several children can be demanding, particularly when dealing with different tastes and appetites. Make-ahead breakfasts are an excellent strategy for parents to provide nutritious meals, reduce stress, and cultivate a calm start to the day. The objective is to prepare options that are balanced, convenient, and appealing, ensuring children feel cared for without the need for constant negotiation. By ensuring each option contains a good balance of protein, complex carbohydrates, and fruit or vegetables, you can confidently meet their needs.
Overnight Oats and Chia Puddings
These are incredibly simple to prepare and can be customised for each child.
- Simply combine oats or chia seeds with milk or yoghurt and a touch of honey in individual jars the night before.
- In the morning, allow children to add their own toppings, such as fresh fruit or nuts. This personal touch creates excitement while delivering essential fibre and protein.
Baked Egg Muffins or Frittatas
This is a superb way to provide a savoury, protein-packed breakfast with minimal morning effort.
- Whisk eggs with finely chopped vegetables and cheese, then pour the mixture into muffin tins and bake.
- These can be refrigerated for several days or frozen for longer. A quick reheat in the morning provides a complete serving of protein and vegetables for each child.
Wholegrain Pancakes or Waffles
A weekend batch-cooking session can solve breakfast for the week ahead.
- Prepare a large batch of wholegrain pancakes or waffles, allow them to cool completely, and then freeze them.
- They can be quickly reheated in a toaster or microwave. Serve with healthy toppings like yoghurt, fresh fruit, or nut butter instead of sugary syrups.
Quick and Nutritious Smoothie Packs
Smoothies are a fantastic way to pack nutrients into a quick and delicious breakfast.
- Pre-portion frozen fruits, a handful of spinach, and seeds into individual bags and store them in the freezer.
- In the morning, simply empty one pack into a blender with milk or yoghurt. This method is fast, nutrient-dense, and easily tailored to each child’s preference.
Convenient Breakfast Burritos
These are ideal for busy mornings when children may need to eat on the go.
- Fill a wholegrain tortilla with scrambled eggs, beans, and vegetables.
- Wrap them individually in foil and freeze. They can be warmed in the oven or microwave for a satisfying and easy-to-hold meal.
Encourage Children to Participate
Involving children in the preparation process fosters a sense of ownership and makes them more enthusiastic about their meals.
- Let them help assemble their own overnight oats, sprinkle toppings on muffins, or fill the blender for smoothies.
- This participation not only teaches them valuable life skills but also reduces fussiness at the breakfast table.
Spiritual Insight
Preparing wholesome meals for our children is an act of worship and a practical expression of gratitude for the provisions Allah has given us. It is a way of nurturing both their bodies and souls.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Maaidah (5), Verse 88:
‘And consume from that nourishment (which has been provided) for you from Allah (Almighty), (which is) clearly lawful and absolute purification; and seek piety from Allah (Almighty), in whom you believe.’
This verse reminds us that consciously choosing nutritious and permissible foods for our family is an act of mindfulness and obedience to Allah. Furthermore, providing meals that build strength and well-being aligns with a core principle in Islam: valuing the health of a believer.
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 79, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both…’
By preparing energising and healthy make-ahead breakfasts, we are helping our children become strong in mind and body. This enables them to excel in their daily activities, from their studies to their prayers, fulfilling the Islamic guidance to care for our physical health as a foundation for our spiritual lives.
